| Yes, bulk(oem) to retail firmware. Very possible. But u risk voiding the warranty on your horribly expensive 50 dollar drive ![]() Go here: http://dvdpro.club.st/firmware/BENQ_FW.htm Pls run Nero CD-DVD Speed (disc quality test) on any dvd before you update to retail, pls report back here if the ripping is around .9x-1.1x. I suspect it's the oem firmware that is screwy. |

| I get the hanging problem if I am using the other DVD-ROM drive on the same channel as the benq during the firmware update. I don't think it is related to any particular firmware version for me. My drives are using the microsoft driver on an IDE channel provided by my Nforce 3-250gb chipset. |

Any technical reason why this drive is not supported? If you need alpha testers for NEC 3500 in the future drop me a PM.

| The technical reason is the drives before 3520 use a different CPU and also different firmware that uses a very strange media code tables. All drives supported by MCSE use tables where you can read the media code name in one piece. This was not my choice, they all had this nameing structure. The 'older' NEC drive firmwares split the name after 8 characters and have two tables for each media type to store the name. To start with NEC drives I took the firmwares which use the usual naming schema and can be integrated the easy way. These newer firmwares also use an index in each media entry which should allow easy lossless strategy swapping. The older firmwares do not use such an index.

| Maybe you should wait until I know it really works the way I think it works . The lossless strat swapping should also be possible with the older firmwares at a very high level without digging into the firmware details and without changing the code at all. Instead of changing an index I will have to change the splitted main media code tables. So in theory all known problems are solved. Reality might be different ...

| Meaning the DDW82 media table structure is so different that I had to spend several days to analyse and implement the support for it. So there will be no MCSE support for DDW82 drives.

| Hi Ala42! I'm new in the Benq section (was more in the Nec because of my Nec 2510) since I got my first BenQ, the 1640, two days ago. First of all, thanks for your great work! I just want to ask you, if you could implent the 1640 into your nice tool. It has some limits, I'd like to remove. Basically, it only reads DVD-9 @12 (according to DVDDecrypter) and it can't overspeed TY 8x to 12x... I'd appreciate if you had some time to look at that...

| Hi ala42, I posted this question on another thread and dmagic1 suggested I put it to you. Have now flashed the drive successfully with B3KC. However the whole idea with upgrading the firmware was to be able to burn my Sony DV-R 08D1 at 8x. Using firmware B3HC I could burn at 4x but with B3KC only at 2.4. Using MediaCodeSpeedEdit to read the speed settings for different media B3HC should burn this media at 4x (OK) and B3KC at 8x (NO only 2.4). Why is setting not followed when I try to burn with firmware B3KC? Using Nero 6.6.0.1 |

| Which speeds are displayed in nero cdspeed's disk info ?

| Use DVD Identifier to produce a report about the media, both with B3KC and B3HC. Also rerun the cdspeed diskinfo with B3HC.
