I own a DVD/CD RW drive. Model# DH-16W1P161C

Manufacturer is: Philips and BenQ Digital Storage Corporation (i think)

When I insert certain DVD movies into this RW drive, it will not play them, even if the DVD movies are bran new. I have another DVD/CD drive in my computer that I use to play the DVDs that the the RW drive will not play.

Also. I just burned an RW disk using this RW drive. After the burn was complete, I took the disk out for a moment, reinserted it, and the RW drive would not read the disk. It doesn't even sound like the drive is trying to read it. The light on the drive blinks a little bit but that's all... Yes, I closed all program before I burned the disk, to avoid buffer underrun errors

Are there any firmware updates available for this model? If so, what website can I go to??

In sum, any other ideas that could be wrong here???

this problem has been driving me nuts for some time now

Hi. I downloaded the Firmware using the link you provided.

However, when I ran the executable to install the firmware I got this error:

No matched drive detected !
This utility is only for LITE-ON DVDRW LH-16W1P.

Detected drives:

use this tool for flashing of the lite-on firmware.
http://club.cdfreaks.com/f44/flash-u...ferrerid=65105

select the correct drive.

Thanks, I downloaded the Flash Utility but how do I run it? The file I downloaded looks like a read-only file. When I click on the file it says "windows cannot open this file".

I was able to flash the drive following the instructions given for it, but I can't confirm whether the firmware was really updated. When I look in device manager to check under "hardware IDs", my drive is still listed as LG12, same as before the flash. Should it be updated , or am I missing something here?

thanks

Did you reboot your computer? If not, do that now.

I realized that I didn't flash correctly before. When I clicked on the "write" button I selected the .bin file that FlashUtility saved, when I did the read. However, I just tried to Flash, selecting the
SL08.exe file that was provided for me and it didn't work....It says:

"The firmware was not found in the specified file! Make sure the file is not compressed."

I don't know what they mean by that. I unzipped the LiteOn firmware update and got the SL08.exe file, which is what I selected.

?????????????

download this patched firmware here
http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares/d...hed-fb-eos.rar

after flashing with SL02 firmware you can then open directly Lite-On official firmware SL08.exe without needing flash utility.

Thanks, It worked. I verified in device manager that it was updated to SL08.

Now that we have that out of the way I was wondering if you might be able to tell me why the Philips/BenQ drive will not read certain DVD movies, even when they are not scratched. I have to play those DVD movies in my other DVD/CD ROM drive.

Also, after burning DVD+RW disks, and the burn session is closed and the disk is ejected, I'll reinsert the disk and it will not read the DVD+RW disks. It will burn them just fine but it will not read them.

After the firmware update I checked to see if these problems were corrected but the problems remain.

Thanks much

what software are you using to write dvd+rw? can you post a burn log? what types of files are being written? what is the behavior of "will not read them"? do you get error message? what software are you using to read the dvd+rw?

edit// okay i re-read the first post and have answers to some of those questions. please answer the others and provide more details if you can please.

I'm not using any special software to burn the disks. My OS is Windows Vista Business so I use the software built into the OS.

I have three DVD+RW disks that I'm trying to read with the RW drive. Two disks are burned with the "live file system", and the other disk is burned with "mastered" file system.

With respect to the two DVD+RW disks with "live file system", one disk has .pdf files burned onto it, and the other disk has video game emulators (installation executables) and ROM files burned onto it (some ROMS are zip files and some are .bin files)

With respect to the DVD+RW disk with the "mastered" file system, I have the same emulators and games burned onto it as the other DVD+RW disk that I mentioned. I tried making a "mastered" version when troubleshooting, to see if the file system used made any difference.

No error codes or anything of the like appear when burning these disks. I also make sure that all programs are closed to avoid buffer underrun errors when burning. When the burns are complete, I eject the disk and the sessions close automatically, by default. Then, I reinsert the disks after burning them and they do not show up in Windows Explorer, under "my computer". Sometimes they make Windows explorer crash and I have to close it with task manager.

Incidentaly, I have tried using CDburnerXP a few times to see if it made any difference. Using the default recording speed of CDburnerXP (4x), I sucessfully burned some DVD+RW disks but they will not be recognized by Windows Explorer, when I reinsert them.

I also used CdburnerXP to record a DVD+RW disk using 1x recording speed to see if that helped, but it did not help.......In that case, I did get errors... I had burn logging enabled when I used the 1x recording speed, but I don't know where the log is saved in Windows.

thanks for working with me on this..

please download and install ImgBurn
http://download.imgburn.com/SetupImgBurn_2.4.2.0.exe

leave all settings at default

in the "Easy-Mode-Picker" choose Write files folder to disc [ Build Mode ]

now in build mode

click the browse for a file button

choose your dvd burner as destination

click on build

please post the burn log, you can find the logs in Help Menu > ImgBurn Logs

[thanks to the official imgburn forum for the pictures ]

I tried burning two disks and they both failed. When I click on "build" to burn the disk, it tells me it is going to format the disk, but then it takes about 15 minutes and to erase the disk. Finally, after it is done erasing, it asks me to approve some stuff and then it attempts to burn.

The DVD+RW disks are new and have never been used so I don't no why it is erasing the disks.
I only have two more unused DVD+RW disks left, at this point.

Here is the log... thanks

brand new DVD+RW must ALWAYS be formatted before use. There's no way around it, although you might not see it happening.

you really need to upgrade your RAM.

your not writing much to these disc. have you tried to write at least a Gigabyte of data? you could use cdr's?

imgburn reports the write was successful but the verify fails.

the +rw disc are still usable, you can do a full erase using imgburn and they will become blank again. in build mode click on tools menu > drive > erase disc > full.

try burning a fully erased and formatted +rw disc. uncheck verify located under your destination drive.

have you tried to open the disc with windows explorer?

The disks cannot be read by the drive, period. They will not show up in windows explorer. I did as you said and tried to erase the disk and it said, "Device not ready (no reference position found)". The only way I can read the DVD+RW disks is if I insert them into my DVD/CD ROM drive.

I realize I can be using CD-R disks but the reason I'm using DVD+RW disks to to get a feel for using different types of disks. I'm learning to be a general PC tech. I know I need more RAM too....definately!

Recent Info. I have gathered leads me to believe that this brand of RW drive has compatibility issues with DVD+RW disks. Despite the fact that the MFR says that the drive supports reading DVD+RW disks, it will not. I just bought and burned some DVD-RW disks and the drive will write AND read them just fine. I've spoken to other techs. who claimed to have throw away entire boxes of +RW disks because of compatibility issues with their RW drives.

well sorry about your luck.

i have some memorex branded optodisc DVD+RW disc. no problems in lite-on 20A1P, benq 1640, pioneer 115D or optiarc 7201A.

your Lite-On 16W1P can also be crossflashed with 20A1P firmware. just load the patched 20A1P firmware then flash to official firmware from lite-on site.

When I run the KLOP flash utility and select the LiteOn drive, the "Write" button does not become active.
