Hi
Basically that's correct. If you had a perfect running 1640 & asked if you needed to upgrade. I'd say why rush, give it a f/w upgrade or two. If your saying you need a new drive & it's between the 1640 or 1650. Then the 1650 is the better buy for the future.

Ok thank you. Yes it will be a new drive. Have you heard many reports of this drive failing prematurely or having a short life?

Hi
There have been one or two duff drives, but when you consider this is probably the best selling drives at present. I don't think that percentage wise it's anything to worry about. I fully recommend the 1650, unless you require LightScribe. In which the 1655 is the one.

The review is about Philips DVDR1660, not the BenQ DW1650. They are the same drive but different firmware thus supports differently. The Philips firmware offers SolidBurn and OverSpeed but lacks other BenQ's QSuite features such as WOPC control and FE/TE tests. Also, the Philips drive reads DVD±R at 12x only while BenQ DW1650 can read at 16x.

Hi,

I have a question. If the DVDR1660 and the BenQ DW1650 are the same (technically), is there any way to "convert" a DVDR1660 into a BenQ DW1650? Like Firmware Update or something like that. Did anyone tried this out? Thanks in Advance.

WoW, the write quality is good on this drive, I guess the firmware team for philip is doing a great job. Thanks Jan for in depth review.
