Thanks Jan70 for yet another good review.

* Does not support Mt. Rainier
* Reads CD-DA only at 40x
* Reads DVD±R only at 12x
* Green LED for both reading and writing
Great drive.
BTW, dont think that many miss Mt. Rainier support, (or as one of our members said a while ago; a "goat living in mountains".)
And MCSE also works with Philips drives IIRC.

I have two question not quite related to topic.
First what's the difference between 1648 and 1628. (Just ordered last mentioned as replacement for my "dead" 1640)
Second, when will 8851 drive be available.

I have this drive for a while now, and I just love it!!!! It is a great DVD burner and reader. I found no reason to crossflash it with the 1640 FW ... so far

The only official information I can give you at the moment is the following drives that is coming soon from Philips:

DVDR1660
DVDR1680
DVDR1688
DVDR16ST
DVDR16VR

Some of these drives will properly have different model/names in the shops.

Examples:

SPD2400BM/00
SPD6000FD/00
DVDR1660K/00
PBDV1660B/00
PBDV1660G/00
SPD1400BD/00
SPD1400BD/96
SPD1400BD/97

However, it is possible that some of the drives is already available in online stores. (Or at least listed with an estimated delivery date).

Nice review, as always.

I personally miss DVD-RAM support and faster DVD-R DL write support.

Also, here: http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/253/2
Why should it report DVD-ROM as "DiskType" for a DVD+R??? Not Booktype?!

I think it's an option in CD Speed, shown here:

Basically, the reviewer had "Disc Type" set to display "Book Type." That part of the CD Speed UI should be changed so changing whether "Disk Type" or "Book Type" is displayed also changes the wording on the main screen to either "Disc Type" or "Book Type."

Is this Philips DVDR1648 available in USA? Could not find any stores by "googling" the name. Confusing...

Thans for the information.

I'm very satisfied with my Philips 1648P1.

No need to crossflash to Benq 1640.

I really like this drive, but I haven't found a CD that would burn faster than 32X!!!
Has anyone noticed this???

Hi,

I was going through the review and ended with slight confusion after having read the conclusion:
Quote:
Positive:
(...)
* Reads CD-ROM/CD-R/CD-DA at 48x

Negative:
(...)
* Reads CD-DA only at 40x
Also, I would very appreciate if the reviewer (in general) would take a closer look at the software bundled with the retail version of the drive, not only at the Media the software is located.
Why I request that?
Most drives come with crippled Nero Express, but some manufacturers (there is a rumour, that Philips did so) might bundle the "Full featured" Nero Burning Rom". That would be an advantage, at least for some users.
I admit, that the advanced users don't care about the software package, but it is mentioned in the reviews, so why not have a deeper look at?
