I have a matter of days before my initial warranty expires and I won't be able to return this.

I can´t talk as expert, as i do not yet own any dvd writer, but, I would try it as mor as I can in these days. For what I saw in this site, it is not a good model, but maybe there already is a good firmware available, should wait answer from a more expert user...
Luck

what you guys think of this scan?

Media: Verbatim 16x SL DVD+R (MIJ Taiyo Yuden)
Drive: Benq 1670 firmware v.103
Burned @ 16x, DVD-ROM

Based on the quality scan, it's very good. If you add Transfer Rate test and the graph is smooth, then it's a very good burn overall!

I should also add that it's a mediocre drive, there are at least 10 current drives I'd choose before it.
