Thnx 8T8,

I tried the program (V0.7.0) but it will not recognise my drives ... The box will be empty, while there are two drives installed - has this something to do with ASPI-drivers? I tried the Adaptec ASPI files during troubleshooting and I cannot find the way to uninstall them.

Well not sure why it doesnt work maybe Quikee knows but you can just do it the "old fashioned way" go get WinDWFlash and the B7T9.cvt flash the drive with that firmware then use BenQ's official B7W9 update to upgrade it to the latest firmware.

Thnx again,

I solved the problem: using the "kill ASPI" option from ForceASPI 1.7, then copying wnaspi32.dll and BQFlasher to the same directory ... The drive flashed successfully and is now recognised as a BenQ 1620.

Going to burn an Imation disc now

Regards,

Hans

Dear Quikee

Thank you very much for such a quick reply and the resulting upgrade of the BSFlasher.

Thanks to you my Benq is up and running :-)

Strangely enough, though, BSFlasher only managed to flash my frive on the 8th attempt. For the first seven attempts it displayed a message "Drive Flashing Failed". A .cvt file worked for me, BSLB.

I must note, that it is important to keep the command line capitalisation strictly the same as it appears in your post. Otherwise the switches do not work. This could lead to people not being able to utilize the switches due to miscapitalisation.

Thank you very much, and if you ever visit Kiev, Ukraine call me up - the beer is on me

It doesn´t work on windows 2003... Same config, but on windows XP SP2 works fine (same aspi drives, same hardware, same burning apps, etc).

Fabulous job on the BQFlasher!

And may I add that I absolutely love these forums - I came | | <-- that close to purchasing a PX-740A external for $179 when I read that the Hi-Val was the same drive. You saved me $80!

Now, the firmware in my Hi-Val says GSJB, should I still cross-flash to the BenQ FW even though its only GSHB?

If you're going to cross flash it use BSLB, not the GSxB series. After all, GSxB wouldn't be a cross flash.

It worked great for me. I turned my BSLB into BEFB with no problems. I think I like BEFB better than BSLB, I get a better burst rate and I tink my burns are few seconds faster and my scans are getting lower PIE . (I think, I am not sure yet)

Hi
GSJB is more recent than the GSHB, so you'd be going backwards. This f/w is of BenQ origin. (For bulk only) At least crossflash to BSKB or BSLB so as to take advantage of Solid Burn/OverSpeed.
If I'm right in saying that going by your post this drive is being used externally, then BEFB f/w would be better for you. This f/w supports SB/OS.
Get QSuite 2 as well.

You could of save another $40 out of that HI-Vav purchase by buying the genuion drive itself (BenQ1640) for $40 orless.

Any chances that a future version will support BenQ dvd-rom drives? It would be useful to flash Plextor PX-130A drives to Benq 1650V and vice-versa.

Just curious what would be the advantage of this?

Yes, I am using it externally and I have had issues with BSLB so I'm going to give BEFB a shot and see how it goes but I'm having a heck of a time downloading from the BenQ site - does it exist anywhere else?

How do you like BEFB? I have found it is the best of the BenQ firmwares, even though I use it internally it still gives me a better burst rate and UDMA 4, and for some reason my scan have much lower error rates.

Since going to BEFB, I've had only a few problems with the drive locking the machine but I think that might be due to the 7 USB devices I have hooked to the laptop thru multiple USB hubs. I have not done any scan or burst rate comparisons, but I'd be glad to post up what I'm getting if anyone would like to see it.

Yes I would be very interested to see them, I would also like to know what software you use to encode and burn with. Thankyou for your input, like I said above I use BEFB also but I use it internally.

Here are my test results.

I predominantly use CloneDVD2 w AnyDVD for encoding and burning unless the DVD is a DVD-5, then I use DVDDecrypter ISO-Read and ISO-Write.

Not doing much comparisons, how do my results look?

Check the DMA settings of your drive. The 10 MB/s burst rate indicates DMA is off.

I'm using it externally, not sure where the DMA mode for USB devices can be configured but its not at the drive level.

Here's some results using a DVD-ROM..

Do as Ala42 suguested. Your burst rate should be over 30mbs. Your UDMA should be UDMA 4 with that firmware.

That would be nice, but where do you configure that with an EXTERNAL USB drive?
