BenQ / Philips Writer Discuss, BenQ EW164B (BEFB) Firmware: at CD and DVD Writers forum; The read transfer rate 'problem' is no problem, it took just one second longer. As already said by beach-hobo, the write speed might make a difference. __________________ LiteOn/Benq/LG/NEC/Pioneer/Samsung/Toshiba stuff: MediaCodeSpeedEdit V 1.2.0.5, released November 17th 2009

Read cross flash instructions in the FAQ, even when it was supposed for a 1620 drive, and get the BEFB firmware as .cvt file.

Yes, good point

I only have 8x -R discs (TYG02) so I've turned OverSpeed On.

Note that Solid Burn has always been enabled for both Supported and Un-Known discs. I haven't cleaned the Learned Disc entries after crossflashing.

These are the first 16x burns as I have only been burning at 8x and 12x.

First burn is with WOPC On and second is with WOPC Off.

I've included the PIE and PIF scans as well. The spikes at around 1.4GB are always there (between 3 and 6) on these TYG02s even when burning at 8x.

No problem ...

Yes, both discs were scanned with the drive in the external enclosure. I only have a laptop here at home so I have no choice

Here they are again, this time scanned by a BenQ 1620 in a ALi M5621 based USB2.0 enclosure. Burst rate of 20MB/s.

Again, first is WOPC On and second is WOPC Off.

I should have said "BURNS" not "SCANS" were done on an external. With a Burst Rate of 20MB/s I can't see you reaching a 16X burn !!!!!

No, not with 20MB/s.

Both discs were burnt in the DW1640 flashed to EW164B in the PL-3507 external enclosure. Connected via 1394, the burst rate is 27MB/s so no problem with 16x burning.

@mankmeister
I want to thank for the work you have done...
I have a DW1620 in a PL-3507 Case (Extermal Firmware) and because of the UDMA3 SetUp it just gets to 15.4 MB/s only. Guess it time for a DW1640 (UDMA4).
From your testing I now know it's possible !!!

Here's another couple of burns ... this time from an ISO file.

First is WOPC On and it looks like it kicked in and restricted the burn to 12x.

Second is WOPC Off and it approached 16x.

Hi
Thought I'd mention in previous scan Solid Burn On - OverSpeed On - WOPC On.
These scans WOPC Off - Solid Burn & OverSpeed On.
Notice solid burn restricts burn speed.
However the best result I've had with this media.

Hi
mankmeister I don't doubt that you had WOPC Off according to your s/w, however looking at your scans it appears that WOPC is On in both scans due to tell tale rythmic dips in write curve.
I suggest that in post # 59 the difference is down to solid burn.
See the difference in the write curves of mine in posts # 61 & 62. Quite different I think you'll agree.

I downloaded the firmware from The Dangerous Brothers web site, since the FAQ showed that their firmware was an easy way to flash one drive to the other.

I ran it, selected my BenQ 1640 drive from the list, then clicked the Upgrade button and nothing happened other than the Upgrade button becoming disabled.

Did I do something wrong?

You have to use WinDWFlash and the .cvt and the same proceedure to get back.

Update to my post #35, here.

While moving my drives aroud on IDE channels, I forgot I was still using a 40 conductor IDE cable...
Changed to a 80 conductor cable and everything is okay.

Edit. Note the difference in transfer test...

Ahh, okay. I assumed when it said use The Dangerous Brothers firmware, that I could use the EXE version.

So is there a CVT version of BSLB around somewhere?

Hi
Not forgotten you, but you've already had an answer. However just for you.
Couldn't do it earlier as I didn't have a 1620 then.

Zebadee, notice I said Qscan, not SolidBurn/Overspeed. It appears to work, but errors out after about 20-30 seconds. That's with all the variants except smart, which appears to work properly but claims that all media I've tried isn't recommended at ANY speed, be it 2.4x or 16x or anything in between.
Try it and let me know if you get the same behaviour.

Hi
Sorry trying to do too many things at once & read quickly was sure it said QSuite.
Anyway in answer to your query, yes it's same for me.
Hadn't actually tried QScan till now with this f/w.
