Official Thread

Here's my first patch for the BenQ DW1680/DW1800/DW1810/DW2000 drive. FastBurn uses the higher burn RPM for 8x and 12x burning with both +R and -R media. Now the DW series can burn faster than the older model BenQ drives with 12x burning typically sub 6:30.

Please make sure you use the EEPROM Utility to make a backup of your EEPROM just in case.

What is FBL?
FBL is a less aggressive version of the FB firmware that burns a disc at 12x in about 6:40. This has proved to be a very good speed for 12x burning due to it's improved quality and jitter.

What is ESB?
Enhanced Solid Burn uses a more sensitive Solid Burn, which increases in sensitivity towards the end of the burn, to ensure even better burn quality, while fast burning, overclocking or burning media at rated speeds.

Feel free to post scans here or in the drive's normal scans and discussion thread. Please state that it was using FB/FBL firmware if you choose to use the normal scan thread.

Seems not that many here get excited over Lite-On branded DW1800 drives now that the hunt is on for all what's left from DW1650/1655 drives.

Anyway, I've been playing around with my drives hooked up on oldish PIII-733MHz box, this mostly for fun and to find out which of my drives is fastest one with this slow cpu.

MID: SONY16D1 (made in Austria?)
Type: DVD-R 16x rated
Burned with: CD/DVD Speed 4.7.0.2
Burned as: Create Data Disc
Burned at: 18x speed
Burntime: 5:24
Drive/Firmware: LH-18A1P@DW1800 /ZB35_FB.
Setup; Intel 815PE mobo, PIII-733MHz, 256MB ram-100, 200GB WD HDD.

Above "synthetic" test with only dummy data writen to disc was no problem for PIII-733. Let see what happens when we make a real life burn.

All settings, hardware and media the same as above.
Backup of image (ISO) file with ImgBurn 2.1.0.0

Not a full 18x burn, seems system was not able to feed burner fast enough causing a relink/speed drop at 2.7GB, but drive finished at 16x+ anyway.

Recovery of a poor batch of Verbatim MCC 004 Retail Branded (CMC Papa) 50 pack from Office Max. These have burned rather poorly on every burner I've tried so far, but they are usable with the BenQ 1800!

I thought "fast burn firmware" was created/intended for fast burns.
MCC-004 is 16x rated media after all...

But, better safe then sorry.

BTW, DW1800 is a very good scaning drive.
