BenQ / Philips Writer Discuss, BenQ DVD Writer Are Vanishing at CD and DVD Writers forum; The Norwood model DW1650's have "GCFC" firmware. Ah, maybe thats what prompted me to open up the box. Well I just hope this drive won't be like my Plextors. Been a loyal Plextor user for years now (from their 8x CD-Writers to my PX716A) and I'm sick of the auto-destruct feature that activates after the warranty is up

Some I/O Magic with Lightscribe at Staples are BenQ 1655s also.

Thanks Bob34 and DVD Addict.

I found these on their website ...

$69.99
http://www.compusa.com/products/prod...L_DVD_RW_Drive

$59.99
http://www.compusa.com/products/prod...L_DVD_RW_Drive

Do they look like the BenQ 1655 to you?
I thought they were supposed to be $30-$40.

I paid 69.95 for mine. The Norwood's 1650s were 79.99 with instant saving of 20 bucks and then $30 bucks mail-in rebates (which I never count on). I may of overpaid, but f it I paid 130 for my Plextor so I'm not going to sweat it especially since I really needed a drive after it started refusing to burn.

Is the 1650 the same as the 1655 except that it doesn't support LightScribe?
I didn't notice a $20 instant savings.
Is it posted anywhere or is it unique to your store?
Do you have a link for the rebate?

Thanks

http://www.compusa.com/products/prod...pe=rb#moreinfo Here's it on the Compusa, it seems to be everywhere.

No clue about the differences betwen 1650 and 1655, I think its just LightScribe but I'm new to BenQ so *shrug*.

I read that the 1655 gets past some tough copy protection for backups.

Does anyone know if there's an instant $20 off the Connect drives?

I checked Staples I/O Magic drives.
They were tres expensive.
I think a pink bag is supposed to be BenQ and clear is Lite-On.
One is a bag and the other is bubble wrap.
I forget which is which. So, I just looked for pink or clear.

There's no sale or any rebate for the CONNECT COMPUTER drives. The $69.99 one is a REBADGED BENQ 1655. I confirmed this by opening it up and seeing DW1655 on the drive.

1655 has LightScribe. I think the 1655 had more fully developed firmware at one time. Maybe the 1650 has caught up. But for LightScribe and firmware they are the same.........Yes, it is $20 instant savings at the store on the Norwood DW1650. The actual purchase price is $59.99 with a $30 mail-in rebate form furnished by CompUSA at the check-out counter. I think the sale ends tomorrow....

Although the BenQ 1655 is amongst top performer drive but the price tage of $69.99 is to much for the drive when you can buy it as OEM or repackaged for $30-$40.

CUSA's customer reviews seem to give the Norwoods bad marks.
I'm guessing Xflashing to the latest BenQ firmware would rectify their problems.

TCAS:
If there were many online retailers like Newegg & Zipzoomfly that had the 1655 instock then I would suggest buying it from them. But unfortunately they no longer carry it so the next best thing if someone really wants a 1655 is to buy a rebadged one from COMPUSA. If someone is desperate enough for a 1655 they'll pay the money for it. I've yet to see any online retailer having the 1655 instock at this time with the cost at $30-$40. When this drive was first released sure the cost was $30-$40.

Parato Optimal:
COMPUSA's customer reviews are rubbish because most of them don't know the drive is a rebadged BENQ 1650/1655. If the NORWOOD MICRO drives don't come with the official BENQ firmware just crossflash it.

Look for the sales of I/O Magic from Staples or CompUSA brand and Norwood from CompUSA this week end.

Yeah, I've noticed that, too. What's the deal? When I purchased my DW1655 last Christmas they were difficult to find then as well. Wonder why BenQ can't keep the market supplied. I was going to recommend the 1655 to a friend but I'm not sure I will now as I have no idea when the unit will be available. Meritline list them as being out of stock now but I have no idea when they expect a new shipment.

At least Benq announced their retirement from the european market. I haven't read about them doing the same in the US.

There was another rumor that Lite-On has acquired "Optical Products" from BenQ and we will not see BenQ label from now on.

You are right on this because surprisingly the new 1800 series drive are being marketed with BenQ label but how long would it last is any one guess.
