It is refurbished one so is hard to go along for refurbished drive when you don't know what you are getting.

Sean, If you truly want to buy my drives, I have a 1620 and a px-740 that have burnt less than 15 discs as one of them is on my mum's computer doing nothing but turning on and off and the 1640 is collecting dust in basement filling a gap in my home server PC. The LS 1655, I exchanged for a vintage DVR-104. I collect drives as a hobby so if you want my drives, I don't need any money but if you have any old burners that can make it through a disc that you don't need, PM me.

Actually, these days I only use dvd media to burn stuff for friends and relatives, and to feel the satisfaction of burning a disc due hard-drives becoming cheaper. I just buy hard drives and keep adding them to my home server. Thats why I buy junk media.

Couldn't agree more with you on this, cmc mag e01 is a good but unappreciated media and I have a 100 pack of philips dvd-r's (~cmc.am3) that are completely rotten. oddly the unbrunt ones kept for comparision with future burners are still intact.

Ps. there was some massive ripping and downloading involved after the discovery.

  1. If you buy the cheapest media you can find, then don't be surprised when the discs pack it in and lose all your data, or you have other problems.
  2. If you're getting tired of your Nexperia BenQs, I can offer them a good home
The scanning capabilities alone ensure that any computer I build for myself now and for the forseeable future, will have at least one Nexperia BenQ.

Check out this PX-740A that has been on eBay for almost a year! The idiot seller had the price jacked up forever, and has only now brought it down to a reasonable price:

There is no price for "Buy it now". So you have to wait all this time to June 10 to find out the ultimate price for this used unit.

I usually don't go for refurbished optical drive, but in this case since the seller is the drive distributor then the refurbishing either has been performed by them or the manufacturer which in both case is very reliable. The price of $24 with free shipping is good one also. Thank you for posting the information.

95% of the BenQ drives you'll find on eBay were made in 2005. Every once in awhile you'll get one that's 2004, and on rare occasions one made as late as 2006, but those are exceptions.

And in answer to a previous assumption, no, the drives listed as "refurbished" are NOT refurbished by the manufacturer. That's not possible since the manufacturer no longer exists. Lite-On has no connection to the old BenQ other than continuing to provide web space for the firmware. Other than that, BenQ as an optical drive company is completely gone.

I haven't seen many new BenQ drives on eBay other than the few that people have been keeping unused in their closets.

The only thing being sold for the most part are used and refurbished, not new.

You are right, I just found out my 1655 is dying on me and I have to find a replacement for. I hope I can find one of those that have been hidden in closet so far and still is new box.

Most likely to find a brand new boxed philips than a benQ

That's how I got my brand new boxed DW1640

When we talk about BenQ drives in this thread, it's already understood that we mean all BenQ drives, including the various rebadged models and the corresponding models that appear under the Philips name. They're all the same drives just with different model numbers.

I know.. so what?

I was just saying it's easier to find a brand new philips (for example, on ebay). I barely ever see a new benQ that's labelled as benQ.. especially since philips is still around and a much more well known name.

Anyway,

Right. I agree 100%. Drives that are actually labeled with the BenQ name are very rare now (but then, they always were to some extent). In the states, you're more likely to find a BenQ under the Sony or Plextor brands, and some under Philips. In Europe, your best bet is Philips.

Many of the people in this thread who own a lot of BenQ drives got a significant number of them via brand names other than BenQ. I'd say that at least half of my BenQ drives are Sony, Plextor, or Philips.
