BENQ DVD DD DW1620 problems

Hello all. I'm new to this forum.

I just got this drive brand new about a week ago.
I installed it onto a computer that was running windowsXP and it was running perfectly fine, it read and wrote beautifully.

I had to reformat that computer and when I did the drive would no longer recognize any CDs that I placed into it.

I've tried to uninstall it and let windows find and reinstall it. I updated the firmware on it to B7V9 the latest I can find.

So far everything hasn't worked.

I used this same drive to install windowsXP and find it odd that now it wont recognize any CD I put into it.

I dont get any type of error message. The drive tries to read the CDs I place into it then it just stops. I can access the drive through my computer and go into the CD that is placed into it but it just shows up blank.

Please someone give me your divine knowledge on this. This is starting to bug me.

I noticed the IAA driver is present did you install the Intel Application Accelerator, if so uninstall it as it causes problems with DVD writers.

The only Intel drivers you should need to install are the chipset drivers which you can get from this link.

Yea I installed the Application Accelerator when I did the fresh install of winXP.
But a day later I uninstalled it because it seemed to lag up my systems and run sluggish.

I ran that file.
Still nothing with my DVD drive.

Did your drive still work before you installed the IAA ? as according to InfoTool IAA drivers are still present in the system the only way to get rid of them might be to format the system again I'm afraid.

Hm yea it would have had to have worked before and after I installed the IAA. Since it comes on a CD that I got with my computer from the manufacture. It's like step 3 out of 5. And after every step I have to reboot. and install something else from the CD. Also..I had IAA installed before I did the format and it worked then.

What you can do?
1. Try to boot from CD - to check drive.
2. Install XP w/o SP2. or
3. Install all last update from microsoft.

BTW: i allways install IAA and no problem with
drive(i run W2K)

I have the same exact problem. It was burning fine for the past two weeks, and will no longer read any media.

On another note this is my second drive. The first was broken when I received it (from NewEgg).

I see that in konig and Tsuneni (if you haven't solved your problem yet) Nero Info Tools log, both of you don't have system ASPI installed. Try installing from here and see what happen. Please report back.

All my three machines hosting all my drives are using Windows XP SP2 without any problem.

I have a pc running XP w/SP2 that has no problems with the BENQ 1620 drive.
It shouldn't really matter that ASPI is installed because NERO uses it's own ASPI.

=konig's Info tool says no ASPI installed so that is probably what zevia meant. Windows is supposed to have it's own ASPI or SPTI driver and some say ASPI is not required but many people have it installed and have no problems. On the other hand some people don't have it installed and do have problems.

Yes that's what I meant. I don't see both system and nero aspi in their log. Last night I installed my never-use-again PX-712A into my son's PC, which don't have anything except Windows XP2 SP2 and Office. XP recognized the drive, howeverl DVD Decrypter didn't show any drive. After I installed Nero ASPI driver (from Nero Burning ROM package), it shows the drive correctly.

Sorry, here's the site Adaptec Windows ASPI (select for windows xp). If this doesnt help try installing nero (trial version if you don't have). Let us know how it goes.

things are getting even worst.. now the DVD is detected by the system but is not respondig.. I can`t open it to put a CD/DVD on it!!! I installed the ASPIU thing but I can´t try anything because de DVD is not responding!!!! ANY advise??

If I understand the Info tool right you have your BenQ by itself on the Primary IDE channel as Master and your Hard drive is on the Secondary IDE as slave. If this is right you could try uninstalling your Primary IDE channel(only) in your Device Manager and rebooting the computer. Windows will reinstall the devices on reboot. Don't uninstall the secondary IDE channel as your hard drive is on that channel and could cause grief if you uninstall it. Let us know.

Depends on chipset, XP+SP2, can work O.K. or not. About ASPI: DVD Decrypter look for Adaptec or Nero only, I'm not 100% sure, but look like.
Install system-HD on primary and Benq on secondary, check cables too, last week i got strange problem with cable, cable report HD - slave, change cable and all fine.

Good luck. And don't give up!! this is fun messing with PC.

Normally, on a XP box ASPI layer is not needed, but if your OS/ burning applications have problem detecting ATAPI devices run ForceASPI based on Adaptec ASPI 4.60
Download link. Unpack in folder of choice.
Execute (doubble click) KILLASPI.BAT, restart compu. Then execute INSTASPI.BAT restart once again.

Adaptec's latest ASPI versions (4.7x) will only cause you problems on a XP box...

I think there's a bug in Nero InfoTool... it also says I have no system driver installed yet dvdinfoPro, dvd decrypter and other programs are happily burning away using SPTI, in fact I use spti for all my apps that support it intead of nero's aspi.
