hrm.......I believe the eject hole and light are in different places than the 1620 and 1640 OEM or Retail of both.

Check the location of the LED light and the eject hole. They are in different location than the DW1620 & DW1640. Bet it's a new design (if the pictures are correct)...

why is it that all brands are presenting new drives with DVD-RAM support now?

if I'm correct dvd-ram was the first available dvd type (well, in the Asian region that is)
but in the US and especially in the EU DVD-/+ R is more popular and available
with the exception of some standalone recorders, dvd-ram is virtually none existent in Europe
why after about 3 years this sudden revival of dvd-ram?
isn't this a case of: too little too late?

Its not non-existent, dvd-ram media can be bought from almost any optical media store. I use DVD-Ram in my Panasonic dvd recorder, its an incredibly flexible format.

I'm gonna have to get myself one of these!

ehh that is why I say virtually, and that is also why I mention standalone recorders

let me formulate it differently: Do you think that the format will become as popular (or even more so) as the dvd+/-r format is in Europe?

I personally think it's a bit late for that and I'm wondering why it took as long as it did.

Of course it wont be as popular as dvd+/-r, its just an easy way for drive manufacturers to sell more drives. Its just a marketing gimmick.

People are saying that this drive will be the same as the Teac DV-W516E (and the pictures do look similar, and the specs do look similar as well). Is there any confirmation on this?

And if this is true, then the DQ60 would be using a Panasonic/Matsushita chipset instead of the Philips Nexperia chipset. I guess they kinda have to because Nexperia was never designed for DVD-RAM. Anyone know if this is a permanent move or just a temporary move until DVD-RAM can be added to Nexperia? And what would this mean for the existing Nexperia features, like WOPC, SolidBurn, PI/PIF/jitter scanning, etc.? And if this is true, I wonder how burn quality will be affected by this non-Nexperia chipset.

Totally no mention of Solidburn or QScan in the abovenamed pdf but Qsuite with Booktyping, Test Write & Tilt Control/Slide Cone are there too.

It has the same shortened length like the DW1640 (both 178mm) so it doesn't seem to fall too far from the old BenQ tree altho' it is a different beast.

BabelFish translation also says, rather cryptically -
Quote:
' BenQ original utility QSuite ' as enjoyed from new technology of record type DVD drive to the user, it is the progressive utility software which is prepared.
1. DVD-ROM conversion management (Booktype Management)
2. Disk test entry (Test Write)

* The part function of Qsuite cannot utilize with DQ60. At the firmware of 2005 October release schedule it can utilize all functions.
Whatever "all" means though... may just be the above 2 being enabled.

still only 5x DVDRAM, was hoping to see a 16x RAM burner soon.

I read somewhere that the TEAC drive is going to be a BenQ OEM, not the other way around...

I guess this line from the cdrinfo article confirms this:
Quote:
BenQ has received OEM orders for Super Multi DVD from TEAC
In other words, BenQ are producing the drive for TEAC.

Yes, that's correct. I never said that Teac is producing BenQ's drives. All that I said is that the drives are going to be the same.

Supposedly, Teac helped BenQ design this drive and that the design is mostly Teac's and not BenQ's.

Just confirmed with the local BenQ manager that we won't be seeing the DQ60 in SG, oh well. Hope you guys can get hold of one to post some feedback here, perhaps that lucky chap, yangxi, since he handles multiple brands (including Teacs).

Marketing rules over consumer's best interests.
DVD-RAM has allways been quite popular in the fareast.
If european consumers don't favout the format - as Panasonic told me - is because they don't do any effort to sell it. Panasonic is selling in Europe just OEM, lots of 500 units minimum as I was told.
DVD-RAM was slower that other DVD formats because its safer (write/check) to guaranty integrity of information.
It can be seen by any computer as another HDD and used as such
It can be used 100 000 times, agaisnt 1000 for other formats (counts everytime TOC is updated?)
If used inside a cartridge, you don't touch the disc, so no grassy fingerprints and a longer lifespan
but
Its more expensive
and sales people want sales figures not consumer interest, if you are happy with minus or plus that's what matters to them...satisfaction its what you perceive as such not exactly top quality products usage.
Now they did clear the standard for 16x DVD-RAM and the format is in a better position to compete with +/-R(W) 5(9).
From the beginning RAM could do 9.4 GB (expensive stuff...)
With new formats coming around the corner, its really strange to see a new force for the RAM format, but this was in the news since one year ago at least~
and we will see new models
Lets hope we can get them all over, not just like Plextor or Teac that only sell in the fareast.
Not like Panasonic that is now making the push but doesn't seem to have the will to sell allover
For me, I would like to get a drive with catridge support even at 16 x
No matter thr arrival of HD-DVD or Blu-ray
