BenQ / Philips Writer Discuss, Archival Gold DVD - burn at 8X or 4X? Help!! at CD and DVD Writers forum; Hi All, I got some Delkin Archival Gold DVD-Rs as part of long-term storage solution for my photos (over 30GB now, and growing at roughly 1GB every 2 months). These cost me $39 for 16 discs in a 3-ring storage binder with 40 inserts. Link to the item at Buy.com

Hi All,

Pricey stuff! And I want to be sure about the burn strategy before I burn the first disc.
The discs themselves are MBI_01RG40 - Moser Baer I guess was expecting TY or MCC for the money.

Anyway, QSuite shows these discs as 16X capable, but Delkin's recommended burn speed is 8X.
So I ran Qscan (image attached) and found that 4X speed is giving the best result.
So should I burn at 4X or should I just go with 8X?

Burner - BenQ DW1640 (excellent performer, no problems)
Software - Nero 6 (has its issues, but works well for me)

Any advice? And does anyone have experience with these discs?

My advice would be to buy some serious media like TYG02 or MCC004 ... Moser Baer isn't specifically known for consistant quality manufacturing ... they can do good, but they can also do very bad.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yep, I already got my photos both on YUDEN T02 (Fujifilm MIJ) and MCC 004 (Verbatim) and stored them at two different locations. But I got some TYs that were burned back in 2002 and 2003 using pioneer & liteon burners that have started to show some degradation. I guess even the best media cannot survive beyond 4-5 years without some degradation.

And since the Delkin claims 100 year survivability for the archival gold dvds, I am hoping they will last atleast a couple of decades. The survivability is increased not by improving burn quality, but by reducing the effect of degradation factors like oxidising, sunlight, humidity, scratches etc. The archival media has a thin layer of gold that is 'supposed' to reduce oxidising and light sensitivity and improve reflectivity. And it also has a scratch resistant outer layer coating. The binder the DVDs come in is completely black and is light & air-tight once closed.

I think you should try a burn at 4x and 8x speed and do quality scan with Nero CD/DVD speed and see for yourself which is best.

I find these DVD's very expensive. And I think you are indeed better of with TY media.

Most discs fail because the dye fails prematurely. The oxidation of the reflective layer takes some time.
