Advantages to Crossflashing DW1650 to Philips DVDR1660?
| BenQ / Philips Writer Discuss, Advantages to Crossflashing DW1650 to Philips DVDR1660? at CD, DVD and Blu-ray Writers forum; Hi, I have a BenQ DW1650 which as everyone knows already, is out of date in terms of firmware updates. So, I read that some people "crossflashed" their 1650s to Philips DVDR1660. Should I do this? What are the advantages? Thanks. |

None, as far as I am concerned it is the people with the Philipps that should be crossflashing not the BenQ.Quote:Originally Posted by NoirHammerHi,

Hi
OK BenQ f/w is unlikely to be updated.
Philips is.
BenQ however has had the edge over Philips for most users since day one.
In theory with SolidBurn enabled (& aloowing for learning of media) there's little gain in f/w updates. Other than making the learning curve quicker/smoother, less susecptable to rogue discs etc.
Personally I'd stick with the BenQ format.
However if you must try it. You can always reverse the process should it not live upto expectations. -

Some people cross flash back and forth just to try out f/w's and see which one works best for their needs. Member pinto2 seems to be the one that mostly does this and posts scans from the tests he does. -

I hear you, but the thing is, I had some problems with Imation DVD-Rs 8x which keeps generating errors. Now normally I won't be this crap but I got it as a gift and wanted to use them up. So, I was thinking that by flashing the drive to Philips, it would resolve this. And I did use MediaCodeEdit. It helped some.
Thanks. -

Hi, I agree, that there won't be any newer firmwares for Benq 165x drives. But I seriously doubt, there will be updates for their Philips branded clones.Quote:Originally Posted by zebadeeOK BenQ f/w is unlikely to be updated.

Well, the main objective here is to read a wider variety of discs and to read those discs at higher speeds. I figure the DVDR-1660p1 would at least allow me to burn at 16X whereas the BenQ won't. -

The best way is to try it by yourself. Also if you have a less quality media, I wouldn't try burning at 16x. Try both firmware -burn some discs, scan + TRT and let us know.

You can apply MCSE read speed patch both on BenQ and Plilips firmwares.Quote:Originally Posted by NoirHammerWell, the main objective here is to read a wider variety of discs and to read those discs at higher speeds. Regarding BenQ DW1650 and Philips DVDR1660, they will both burn at high speed and with good results as long as you avoid the latest (BCIC or P1.6) firmwares.
Sorry to say but I think zebadee was right about firmware updates, now that BenQ is gone out of OD bussines, I doubt we will see any more.

To my experience (and I can read, also to others) SolidBurn algorithm in latest firmwares has been adjusted into far too sensetive mode, causing (unnecessary ?) fallbacks in burn speed on many good medias.
But your milage can vary. -
