The 4163B isn't riplocked to begin with, so of course no riplock firmware exists. If you look at the specs, you will see that it reads DVD pressed discs at 16x and DVD+/-R discs at 10x. In practice I have actually seen the drive reach 10x on DVD+R and DVD-R discs. Ripping of DVD-ROM discs actually does reach high speeds of about 11x or so, although it does depend on the disc being ripped.

What riplock do you mean? If you mean that it only can read DVD+/-R media at 10x, that isn't riplock at all. The drive wasn't made to read those discs faster than that! It isn't being deliberately slowed down by the firmware.

CDFreaks did a lovely test and came up with the same conclusion. It burns at 16x but it is locked at reading at at top speed of 10x. It is the fastest writer on the market at the time of the cdfreaks test and yet it has this silly peculiarity. Perhaps an intentional defect to be able to price this unit agressively? I too, agree that this unit is probably being intentionally slowed down and the most likely place to do that is in the firmware. Look to the dangerous brothers or other super crackers to be fixing this sometime in the future! (probably not up the DB's alley. They are mainly concerned with freedom of speech.)

Can't wait to try out that A104 regionless firmware. Anyone having any issues with it? I have the GSA 5163D external on a firewire bus on my XP pro machine.

Umm.. that review is for the 5163D not the 4163B. The review for the 4163B is here. If you look at that review, you'll see a graph where the reviewer managed to read the DVD-ROM for Half Life 2 at 16x. Why there is a difference in the read speed between the two reviews (5163D and 4163B) is a good question.

However, I noticed that the 4163B will not read video DVD SL discs faster than 10x (my own tests). So perhaps there is some kind of riplock after all. I stand corrected.

i upgraded the firmware --> A303 and now i can not burn past 4x...

also i am actually having troubles burning - it will not get past 3%...

It doesn't sound you have a bad firmware. You can't get past 3% most likely because you have bad media.

it is not bad media as i have tried the same media that failed in another burner and it allows me to burn at 8x (although i didn't go through the process - just wanted to test if it was the media)

so for some unknown reason, the upgrade in firmware has redused the ability to burn higher than 4x...

any idea?

Can you specify what media you are using. Able to burn in another burner does not mean it can burn in the LG.

i am using ritek 8x dvd's...

the problem is that prior to the firmware upgrade the burner was achieving 8x burn...

only after the firmware upgrade have these problems begun to be present.

Is it a + (Ritek R03) or - (Ritek G05)? The A303 fw does allow 8X speed for either the Ritek R03 and G05.
Do you have any other 8X media that you can try in your drive?

Use Nero CD Speed 4.01 (CDspeed2000.com is the original author's site page) and do some Create Data Disc tests. Be prepared to waste a few disks at least.

Ritek 8x media are supported for 8x burning on all LG DVD writers from GSA-4082 to the latest, regardless of firmware. Post your screen captures.
