I threw out the LG burner and got an HP. Works great.

Chef -
I have read several of your other posts on this and other forums. You have a tendency to make people angry. Your comments are curt, sarcastic and arrogant.

Many people have complained that you are not helpful - "Thanks for nothing".

You think that every problem is solved by replacing the "crap" media, when people tell you it used to work but stopped working.

Perhaps it is time for you to retire.....

I think you are overreacting rather badly here! You are reading way too much into your scan results. Spikes aside, the total PIF results are comparable to your NEC, and the total PIE results for your LG drive are 3 times lower than those of the NEC! There's room for improvement in the writing strategies but your LG is far from being useless or garbage! Those spikes might actually not even exist ... if you scan the disc at a different speed on the same drive or if you scan it with a different drive you might get quite different results and no spikes at all. PIPO scanning is far from being an exact science, and some drives simply don't like so much some MIDs while liking others ... or do not like discs written by a particular drive while having no problem with discs written by other drives ... it could depend on media/drive combinations ... there could be a number of reasons for these spikes.

The important thing though is that they are isolated spikes not clustered together and that their overall contribution to the total PIF numbers is negligible. If you do a TRT scan you'll most likely find that the discs will give a nice and smooth reading curve without any slowdowns at the positions where the spikes are, indicating that they are not really a problem. Do you have any problem in playing those discs back on a standalone DVD player?

Looking only at the maximum values for the PIF/PIE or at the final quality score gives a very distorted view of the reality. If instead you look at the average values, the total numbers for PIF/PIE errors and at how the errors are distributed through the disc and the lack of clustering you suddenly see quite a different picture emerging ...

Just to make sure ... the latest firmware is v1.03 which came out about a week ago or so...

If you have a look in the Pioneer forum you'll see that Pioneer 215 is a very well regarded drive and it can certainly write DVD's very well. The fact that you could not write any DVD's at all in XP points in 99% cases to to a system issue which could be either software or hardware related depending on your system configuration and software installed. Maybe if you tell us a bit about your HW/SW configuration we can spot some possible culprits.

Again that sounds more like a potential system problem to me ... how exactly do they fail?

I've got one of these drives and although I haven't extensively tested it yet in terms of different MIDs, I find it to be quite a decent drive so far, especially for a fairly new drive. Most discs I wrote so far with it were Maxell branded genuine TY DVD+R's and with these discs I find the drive to be almost as good as my Pioneer 112L which is far more mature in terms of firmware revisions. PIE/PIF results are quite similar with my Pioneer burns but the jitter is a bit higher on the LG (the maximum is typically under 9.0 on the Pioneer). I've attached a typical example written at 12x ...

@mark

Those scans look very good, and as cvs said if you don't have any playback issues those discs should be fine.
