Ok, did some tests. It seems that of the 5 types of 12x capable 8x DVD+R media supported by this drive, only MCC003, is affected from what I can tell. I tried RICOHJPRNR02 and YUDEN000-T02 and 12x was a supported speed with DL13 (I tested with Imgburn). The other two 12x supported 8x DVD+R media types are MAXELL002 and TDK002, both of which I cannot get hold of so I am unable to test them. The only Maxell 8x DVD+R discs I can get hold of are MIT Ritek and the only TDK 8x DVD+R I can find are all CMCMAGE01.

MCC003 could only be selected at 8x. I tried 3 kinds of MCC003 just to be sure :
- Verbatim Datalife Plus, MIS
- Verbatim 8x DVD+R, MIT by Prodisc
- Mitsubishi 8x DVD+R, MIT by CMC Magnetics

I double checked with Nero CD Speed. Same thing, all are only supported at 8x.

Interestingly, something similar happens with Ricoh 16x DVD+R (RICOHJPNR03). In the firmware, DL13 is supposed to support these at 16x but only 12x is supported as the maximum speed you can burn these discs when you try to burn them.

I suppose this is LG erring on the side of burn quality vs speed. It is rather annoying though, because it means you cannot tell the real supported burn speed of any type of disc with this drive just by looking at the firmware anymore.

I am always surprized when my LG manages such good results on cheap/inexpensive media. This scan in Khypermedia 8X -R burned @ 8X on DVDDecrypter:

You've just discovered a little secret with LG writers - there always seem to be a few odd media codes of not really top quality media that the drives will burn very well. CMC MAG AE1 is one of those. The earlier 4163B would burn these as good as what your burn was like and obviously the 4167B follows after that .

You have to find the right kind of CMC MAG AE1 though. There seems to be at least two totally different kinds out there, both with the same MID. One kind burns really well, the other not that good. On the 4163B, the wrong kind will coaster for every disc. On the 4167B, the wrong kind just doesn't burn that well.

Not really that odd. This is actually the normal way the 4167B burns 8x discs. It uses Z-CLV (Nero CD Speed is wrong when it says CLV) which starts at 6x, then goes up to 8x where it should stay till the end of the disc. With your burn, the drive for some reason could not continue at 8x around the 1.5GB mark, so it dropped back to 6x. That is why the graph looks so strange.

And this is the reason because it seems a strange burn to me. I cannot figure why it dropped @6x

This phenomenon is quite common on my LG 4167b. Speed drops from 8X to 6X even with a score of 99! Go figure...

I burned today one RICOHJPNR02. DVD is burned sucessfully at 12x speed Z-CLV, but unfortunately I can't scan disc because I don't have any BenQ or LiteOn close to me.
Can Samsung 162c could be good for scanning?
Thanx!!!

Hello zemljak
I will try Kprobe or CD/DVD speed to test RICOHJPNR02 disc.
When I did this I will report results here.
