LG GWA-4166B will not recognize DVD Ugh, I'm about to throw this PC out the window! For some really stupid reason I updated my firmware for my LG GWA-4166B drive (at least I think it's an LG, the full name is HL-DT-ST GWA-4166B. An LG right?) Anywho, it no longer recognizes my blank Tayio DVD's. I installed according to HP's web site just as instructed and have been trying to fix this for the last 4 hours. I tried to roll back the driver but that is not an option, as in it says that no previous versions are saved. What to do? Please be patient with me and don't bust on me too bad, I'm not really knowledgable about computers. By the way the drive worked fine with zero problems over the course of about 150 burns, flawless. Help!

Re: LG GWA-4166B will not recognize DVD The drive is indeed a LG. Is this problem only with these TY discs or also with any DVD disc? Is the drive able to read discs (both pressed and burned media)? To check if the drive is not more able to recognize discs, you can do a simple test. Run cd-dvd speed (download latest version here), insert a disc on the drive and finally select the "disc info" tab. Can you see disc features?

Re: LG GWA-4166B will not recognize DVD I don't own any other disks, all Ty. The drive can read both pressed and burned. The CD Speed version I'm using is 4.1.0.0 and it does show the disk type as blank and the length as 4.38 GB as it should.

Re: LG GWA-4166B will not recognize DVD Also, I updated the firmware just as outlined at the HP web site and rebooted the computer. Once Windows started a "new hardware found" icon appeared in the tray. That seems odd to me is that the way it's supposed to work? Also when I put a blank disk in the drive a dialog box appears asking "what do you want Windows to do" and the only options are 1. Create a CD or DVD using CopytoDVD (which is what I used to burn the firmware to a CD as outlined on the HP site) or 2. Take no action Whats that all about?

If it can read and write your discs well then it's all ok. EDIT: You burned the firmware to a CD? Then it had no effect on the drive...

Re: LG GWA-4166B will not recognize DVD Geno, Right you are, obviously it does recognize it, I didn't think to use CD-speed. My problem is in trying to actually burn a DVD using CopytoDVD, when I insert a blank and open CopytoDVD and begin the process the CopytoDVD program gives me the please insert blank media message so I guess it's a problem with the CopytoDVD program not "seeing" the media. Please be patient as I'm quite the newbie and this is way over my head, cripes I just want to get back to burning DVD's. Yeah easier said than done.

Re: LG GWA-4166B will not recognize DVD No problem ![]() To exclude a damaged drive, and to be sure that it's only a software issue, try to create an ISO file and then run a burn test with cd-dvd speed ("create disc" tab), or with ImgBurn

Re: LG GWA-4166B will not recognize DVD KG, Yeah I burned it to a CD, that's the process that updating the DVD entailed as managed by HP. It walked me through the process, although it didn't go exactly as the web site indicated it would. Go figure. I had to wonder if it updated because when I went through Device Manager it still showed the original firmware version. I had updated firmware for various other applications through HP earlier in the day and it was just and exe file (if I remember correctly) and not this rediculous burn it to a CD then restart the computer with the CD in the drive B.S. God why did I update!

Re: LG GWA-4166B will not recognize DVD I bought a 4166b 'on sale' in July, but it never did read/write dvd's and the (7-day) warranty ran out before I realized it. I december, I bought an HP DVD840b (hoping to stay away from LG products). Of course it took me no time to realize they were the same product. At any rate the 'HP' worked fine but the other day I tried to give the 'LG' on more try. After reading some posts I tried cross-flashing my LG w/ HP's .bin file. My LG is now recognized as a DVD840 and I'm happy to say it works great!
