LG Writer Discuss, LG GSA-H10N Error - No DVD/CD Recognizing in Windows at CD and DVD Writers forum; A week or so ago, I tried putting in a DVD just to see what was on it. The DVD wasn't recognized in Windows at all; when I clicked on the DVD drive icon in My Computer, it just froze explorer. Every DVD I try putting in does the same

A week or so ago, I tried putting in a DVD just to see what was on it. The DVD wasn't recognized in Windows at all; when I clicked on the DVD drive icon in My Computer, it just froze explorer. Every DVD I try putting in does the same thing.

Nero (any burning software basically) does not recognize my DVD drive as well; it just says "Image Recorder" and my DVD drive isn't listed.

I tried erasing registry keys as one of the KB articles stated, but that hasn't helped so far.

All that Starforce stuff in there looks ominous. Have you installed a game or software recently with that kind of "protection" on it? Edit: is there a chance that DVD you put in has it?

Well, I went ahead and used the Starforce removal tool here: http://www.onlinesecurity-on.com/protect.phtml?c=55, it it seemed to remove something. After a reboot and re-running the program, it tells me that I don't have any starforce drivers to remove. However, my DVD burner still doesn't work. It seems to be able to boot from a DVD (to install windows for example, but I haven't tried it fully in fear of not being able to install Windows again), but I still can't get to read the contents of any DVD inside the drive.

[Edit] okay, now I get a new error. Instead of crashing, it just freezes up the window. I let the window stay for a while, then i get a "D:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

I wish these messages wouldn't be so cryptic, so I would be able to fix it myself without bothering you guys. Thanks.

I would give reinstalling the OS a try - but only if you have another drive you can use if the reinstall goes pear-shaped (i.e., try reinstalling the OS with your LG, if it fails for any reason put in the other drive and start the reinstall fresh).

(I suggest that because from what you've said, the drive still boots from a disc fine).

Unfortunately I don't have a second drive at the moment, and my friends are unable to give me one (or they are stringy). I will have to wait to buy a new one too see if that works. Thanks for all the help

This will be my last post her before formatting.

When I put a CD in the tray before booting up Windows, the CD can be read. If I take it out and put it back in, it won't be read at all. It was a bit surprising, to be honest. Gives me hope that the format/reinstall will go smoothly.

Its been a few days. Once again, thanks .

I used the same drive to install XP (I really screwed up installing XP ), and everything seems fine now. Iit can read DVDs now, but I haven't tried writing to them as yet. I'm just glad I wouldn't have to get a new one at the moment.

It's too bad all my favourite games are using Starforce (I really like TOCA 3 ), but I'd rather have a working DVD drive.

Ah, I'm glad you managed to reinstall XP ...I'm sure if you can read DVDs, writing to them should be OK. If not, post back

I'm glad you don't need a new drive too, it's a great drive

Yeah, even if my very favourite game had StarForce, I'd definitely prefer to keep my drive intact (and my OS installed!). IMO, StarForce is evil

Things almost work fine, I hate having problems lol.

I was able to burn one dvd successfully, but afterwards, the DVD will practically finish (using Nero here), but at like the final step, it fails. I have the Nero logs, but trying to decipher them is like reading hieroglyphics.

starforce didn't not cause this

running nero registry/driver cleaners works almost every time, its caused by bad ide/atapi driver or some driver filter that has been installed.

Toca Race Driver 3 is working perfectly here
