then how come it has LightScribe? i thought that the Renesas chipset doesn't support LS, which is why the other LG drives (that have LS) are Panasonic chipset! i'm confused

I can only speculate on what is going on, though. It looks like a Renesas chipset drive from the evidence gathered on this new model so far. We won't know for sure till someone opens up the drive and takes a picture of the chipset inside. |

| it also seems to be a Renesas chipset since it's a H10L. the H20N/L are Panasonic the H10A/N are Renesas. so it stands to reason that the H10L is Renesas as well. if so, it would be the first Renesas LG drive to support LS. maybe a new version of the Renesas chipset ?

| thanks for the confirmation 2601. saves me the trouble of opening up my H10L (which i'm due to get tomorrow )still the question remains: if the Renesas chipset is LS capable, why didn't LG use it for the previous LS drives but used the Panasonic chipset ?

| Thanks again 2601 for the pictures and clarification ![]() dodecahedron : Good question. My two guesses : 1. Licensing issues LG developed their first lightscribe drives in cooperation with HP. I've heard that this is the reason why HP's version of the 4166B came out first - part of the deal. Perhaps LG was only allowed to use the technology in cooperation with HP up till now. 2. LG got annoyed witht he Panasonic chipset Most LG writers up till the 4166B were all Renesas chipset driven (ignoring various OEM models). Perhaps LG has simply gotten tired of their experiment with Panasonic chipsets and decided to go back to Renesas. I must admit though, LG got more out of Panasonic's chipsets than any other ODD manufacturer, including Panasonic itself. All this is idle speculation. Who knows what goes on in LG? |

| Or maybe Renesas (owned by Hitachi and Mitsubishi) had not a LS chip ready in time to use with the older drives But other odd manufacturers had chips with LS, so they had to use other manufacturer's chip. |

| Upon closer inspection of the H10L bitsetting properties in Nero, it shows that the bitsetting for RW in not applicable. Although it shows the book type for DVD+DL as DVD-Rom, I have to question it. I tried to burn a backup of one of my DVD's on Verbatim +DL media and it would not play on my home entertainment DVD player. Burned a backup copy using my BenQ 1640 and it was fine. |

| no bitesetting for DVD+RW, well, that was expected thanks for checking up on that. the DVD+RDL that you burned, can you check if indeed it is booktyped DVD-ROM with CDSpeed ?

As for those DVD+R discs, what kind of discs did you use? |
- #41
| not to sound rude, but how did you check in CDSpeed the booktype ? did you use the Disc Info tab? because in the main (Benchmark) tab the info displayed is either book-type or disc-type, dpeneding on a setting in preferences. same goes for the Disc Quality tab i think.
