Following your link, have a look at "estimate shiping time"... meaning they have to it in stock ...they indicate (as probable...) next week, but who knows?
the 66 as 68 w/Lightscribe seem to be yet in the way to the market...difficult for you to get solid refs.

The 2166D is not pre-release. It's been on sale here in Singapore for over a month. See here :

No sign of the 4166B though. Why they chose to release the external version of LG's lightscribe drive and not the internal one, I have no idea.

I'm having a problem with the LG GSA 4166B that I haven't seen posted. When I put the movie ROBOTS in, the driver doesn't recognize that there is a dvd there. One time I got it to say that it is a format that is not supported. This is the only DVD I've had problems with. Any ideas?

LG GSA-2166D has been for sale in Europe for some weeks now. I have bought it. Works flawlessly. Had only one coaster but as I have checked it, it was a media problem (Fuji DVD-R 8x, Made in Taiwan, MID Fujifilm03), not the burner.

Compact, quick and reliable. The medium above that caused a problem, had the same issue in my standalone recorder.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me.

Comprehensive review of the drive is here (can not say that I agree with everything that is stated there, as perfect burners never existed, but this one is near): http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=274

P.S.: The author was "complaining" about write quility in case of some media, I wonder if he checked any other external drives. I had some before, so I know what and how to compare in this case from the practical view of a user, not a reviewer.

I also have the GSA 4166 in an external case with Prolific 3507 Chipset. It works really great, no problems. Only DVD RAM does not work with the actual Panasonic DVD RAM driver.

Lightscribe could be faster, but rumors say next year media will be available to do Lightscribe faster...

It would be interesting what USB chipset is used in the 2166

The internal version of this drive has been available at Sam's Club for under $82+ tax for about four days.

@isadore2:

It is interesting. In the past I was thinking new electronic is faster available in the US. But this is not longer....

The GSA 2166/4166 is available at Mediamarkt (a store like CompUSA) since 4 or 5 weeks. Even 5x DVD RAM media are no problem, with and without cardridge, single and double sided...
Even Amazon.de offers the GSA 4166 since 18. Oct 2005.

Yes, I could find them in the shops by the 12th of October in Frankfurt
Here, I can find the external but not the 4166, but it is just a distributer's option I guess.
Waiting for the the 4168, but not yet in the mkt.
It's a shame the external versions are only USB so far. Hope they come out with an external version of the 4168 with Firewire and USB as before, but I fear marketing people doesn't care and keep with the cheaper solution.....

@agomes

It should not be such a big problem, buy a MacPower Prefect 400+ case and use an internal case. This case has the Prolific USB/FW chipset... so the burn performance should be well.
Do you have exact dates then the GSA 4168 will come. As far as I know the 4168 should support Lightscribe too and the technical stuff (burn performance and Media types) should be the same, only the electronic should be different.
I hope the GAS 4168 is compatible with the Panasonic DVD RAM driver...

I have the LG GSA 4166B and I hooked it up with the cable that came with it i think its a atapi cable and the drive isnt working properly. all Ive tried to do so far is just run DVDs on it and its not playing the smoothly. I set the udma to 2 because thats what I read to do with a atapi cable. If I get a DMA cable will it make the drive work properly?

I beleive and I might be wrong but the 4166 should work in UDMA 4 with an 80 conductor 40 pin cable.
