Hello, this is my first post here.

About two weeks ago I bought a LG GH22LP20 dvd burner (IDE) from Newegg at a fairly good price. It is advertised as a 22X burner and a 16X reader of DVD-R media.

The burn part is right on but the read and/or verify was slow as heck. :-(

Searching the internet brought me to this forum and to some software called MCSE (I think that is the name) that is said to be able to edit burner firmware.

I decided to give it a try. I downloaded the edit software and found a newer version of the LG firmware, ver 1.03.

I loaded the editor, specified the firmware file, specified that I wanted to "increase read speed", and then told it to edit and save. That was painless.

The hard part was deciding if I should really roll the dice and flash a perfectly good burner with firmware that might disable my drive. I decided to give it a try.

The results? Wonderful. Using ImgBurn's "Discovery" option resulted with write readings of 15.1X average, and 22X maximum. It also did this before the flashing.

The verify was the winner, it jumped more than double to 10.7X average and 16.1X maximum. Just like LG says it would be. Too bad it needed patching to really do 16X.

I really don't understand why it read slowly as sold. There is info around about something called CSS, to quiet the drive, but that is BS I think. Does anyone know if the drive could read at 16X without a patch? If so how would an average user know that?

Now, with the patch, this is really a great burner. I make many copies of twelve dvd titles that I distribute nationally and I want each to be verified before I ship them. Now I don't have to sit and daydream while they verify.
