Maybe or maybe not. I know the 4163B and 4167B won't do 16x DVD-R at 12x but the 4166B uses a Panasonic chipset rather than Renesas, which the other two use. So it might not be the same. We won't know till somebody tries.

Just in case you missed it, avoid MCC 03RG20. Maybe 1.02 will be better but I haven't checked yet as I just downloaded it.

My 4166 does MCC 03RG20 at 12X but this media is very bad at any speed with this drive so the 12X speed is worthless.

Re: LG DVD GSA-4166B- Maybe the first LG drive Support LightScribe !!!

This drive absolutely BLOWS ME AWAY! Here is the questioned Verbatim 16X DVD-R disks...I get them at Sam's Club in the 100 pak...and they are injet printable made in Taiwan. With my Plextor PX-716A...they burn in over 7 minutes because the burn peaks at 12X and remains for the rest of the burn...then I get 96 quality. In my Benq 1640...I burn at 16X all the way...but the last .5 gb is pretty messy...quality around 94. I got the LG GSA-4166B today...got it home...with firmware 1.0...upgraded when I read at CDRInfo that the new firmware was posted. Never burned anything until after the firmware upgrade...WHAT A GREAT DRIVE! By the way...I have not burned a DVD+R DL Verbatim 2.4X yet...but after firmware, it says burn speed up to 6X...

Here is one of my DVD-R burns. Very consistent...never lower than 98...

Re: LG DVD GSA-4166B- Maybe the first LG drive Support LightScribe !!!

Dual Layer burn...Verbatim 2.4X at 6X. Was really excited until I got to about 7.5 GB of the scan...quality went from 96 to 91 very quickly. Somewhat disappointed...but looking forward to the day the price drops on the Verbatim 8X DL media. My Benq 1640 normally averages around a 94 on Dual layer...probably the only place where the Benq wins...

Re: LG DVD GSA-4166B- Maybe the first LG drive Support LightScribe !!!

Based on how good the burn is at 6X...even at the layer break...I am thinking media issue...not the drive...won't know until I do another burn...but the media is a bit too expensive to keep experimenting...

Man...I have never seen the first layer look so good...finished at 98% quality.

Do you that this is probably the only Panasonic chipped writer that gives good quality burns? It's quite amazing really.

I have yet to see any burner other than my NECs do a decent job on +RW media, even the Ricoh stuff. I get burns that look like TY +R.

Re: LG DVD GSA-4166B- Maybe the first LG drive Support LightScribe !!!

This drive is scaring me! I mean...What an EXCELLENT drive!!!

I played around with more Verbatim DVD-R 16X disks..I did a test burn and it came in at 5:29...thought...Hmmm!...a bit fast...I wonder if the quality is going to be any good at that speed...KIDDING MYSELF...look for yourself...

My Plex 716A, nor Benq 1640 EVER did burns this clean...I am so happy with this drive...and this is after beating on it for the past few days...with Dual Layer...+R...and Even an old 1X DVD-RAM disk.

I know what you mean! Just burned a CMC MAG E01 disc, and here are the results:

CMC MAG E01 burned with an LG GSA-4166B f/w 1.02

And LS is very good too

Philips CD-R 52X LS, two passes x best quality.

Re: LG DVD GSA-4166B- Maybe the first LG drive Support LightScribe !!!

I bought them for a specific purpose -- to burn unimportant data for others At the price I got them for, I'm quite happy. That the LG burns them so well is what's impressive. Never before did I get such good results.

For my own use, I have ~400 Taiyo Yuden +R and -R discs safely stowed away
