No. And no hacked firmware exists.

A Maxell DVD+R 4X (MAXELL 001) burned @4X by the LG 4166 (1.01).

Scanned on my BenQ 1620 :

The BenQ 1620 (last fw B7W9) overspeeds this old mid @8X with quite the same quality :

I'm now waiting for a few more blank DVD : Plextor DVD-R 8X (TYG02) in case, Plextor DVD+R 16X (YUDEN000 T03) in spindle, some MCC004 in cases, some old Fuji DVD+R 8X (YUDEN000 T02) in spindle, a Philips DVD+RW 8X in case (I hope it starts @8X and not 4X ), a DVD+R DL MKM001 in case and some LS CD-R (Philips + Verbatim).

I've notice that the user booktype settings are not saved after a shutdown/restart.

Is this a default behavior with LG drives ?

I've done some minor tests on CD-RW :
* on two 4X-10X or 8X-10X CD-RW, the burn is 10X CLV (constant 10X from start to end)
* on 24X CD-RW (Verbatim), the burn is 16X-24X Z-CLV (33% at 16X speed, and then 24X till the end)

I guess 32X CD-RW are burned with Z-CLV too.

Yes, it is. There was a command line utility by someone called Alexnoe that would set the booktype for you. If you run this from your startup folder, it will set the book type each time you boot up. Seach this forum for it. It was posted here. The only thing is that I don't know if the utility supports the 4166B.

The other thing with LG writers is that they cannot booktype DVD+RW discs, only DVD+R and DVD+DL.

Somebody already manages to flash 4164 to 4166 1.01 (no LightScribe support) using the 1.01 tool in the zip.

However, better wait for TDB (tdb.rpc1.org) ?

Maybe i'm lucky but i didn't have the need to change booktype settings for my 4166 as they were already set to dvd-rom for plus discs

I've already notice that out of the box

Got some troubles burning my Philips (RicohJPNW21) DVD+RW 8X with Nero CD-DVD Speed 4.10 @8X.

But erasing and burning it with Nero Burning ROM 6.6.0.18 @8X gives a correct result :

There is at least two 1.01 firmwares.

One 1.01 firmware coming with some LG 4166 drives from factory, dated 2005-10-18.
Such drives seems to have problems reading some original DVD.

One 1.01 firmware from mp3mogul@cdrinfo, dated 2005-11-14 that I use without any problem at the moment. My LG 4166 (box) was coming with 1.00 firmware.

I purchased this drive yesterday.

It supports the media shown in the first post. However, the Lightscribe portion is quirky.

I carefully remove a disc from its case, place it label side down in the drive to print a label and it continually refuses to recognize the disc as a lightscribe disc. The price of these discs makes it not very cost effective to have a quirky disc drive that doesn't want to print on the special disks.

Rebooting does not restore the issue.

This is not a 4166 related problem "only", but a LS problem common to every drive and some configurations, as yours.
See the BenQ 1625 thread here : http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=143862
A lot of LS problems are threated there.
