OK, it works with a data CD, so there's no problem, only a firmware speed limitation on Video DVD as usual...

There's a bug in Nero CD-DVD Speed 4.10 when you launch "all tests" on a CD-R, you get a 27Mbps burst rate. When you're doing only the burst rate test, you get a much higher value : 34Mbps...

So far this drive has failed to write to CMCMAG E01, CMCMAG AE1 and TYG02 for me. I get "Error! No Seek Complete (030200)"
It has written other media without these errors.
Firmware 1.01

Is this the LG that has the Panasonic chip instead of the Reneasas chip?

I am not much impressed so far.

I picked it up mainly for the Lightscribe and RAM capabilities but will not tolerate a drive that has issues with mainstream MIDs.

Hmmm, strange that! No wonder the firmware is few and far between...
Makes me wonder if Lightscribe capability is not "chip dependent" then?
BenQ, Liteon and LG all have Lightscribe drives with three different chipsets.

You think LG contracted this out instead of doing an inhouse drive?

It seems that all drives using the Panasonic chipset have writing quality troubles
It's too bad LG couldn't get Lightscribe working with a Renasas chipset.

Where are these 4166 drives made?
Can someone post a drive sticker pic?

Does the hardware(PCB) has any different between October & November drives?

They use the Renesas (Hitachi) chipset, same as the 4163. The 4167 is basically a 4165 drive.

The 4161/4162/4164/4166 use the Panax MN103 chipset, as do some earlier models 4083 and great deal of the OEM drives used in standalone DVD Recorders and DVD/VCR combos from LG, Sanyo, etc.

We've done some analysis of the 4166 1.00 and 1.01 firmware and they look to be patchable. Need to understand the flashing process.
