Greetings.

I bought an Acer Computer less than a month ago that came with this DVD/RW drive (HL-DT-ST DVD-RW_GSA-H41N ATA DEVICE).

I was happily adding data to disks last night (so I thought).

Today I put in a CD that I had erased with Vista's "erase this disk" thingie (I used the link at the top of the folder that said "erase this disk") into the drive so that I could put new data on it and it asked me if I wanted to format the disk (which I thought was odd since all I did was erase it). Anyway, I went ahead and started the format proccess it says not to stop the process or turn of your computer, and as I would have it, during this process there was a power failure.

Now, the DVD drive doesn't work at all. When I go to "my computer" it says the DVD drive is there, but I can't read ANY disks I put into it (CD or DVD written or blank).

I tried uninstalling the DVD Drive and doing the deletion of the regedit that I found on another site, rebooted (it reinstalled the drivers automatically) and it's still not reading anything.

Furthermore, the disk that I thought I had added information to last night, can't be read by any other drive in the house! It's like the disk is toast.

Is there a fix for this or am I looking at replacing the drive completely?

i also got a acer pc from pc world its a t180. i have the exact same problem with my dvd drive. frustrating or what.
if you hear of a cure to fix this then please spread the details. i will do the same for you.

i have contacted pc world tech guys and ran through a list of tests and stuff.
they think its the optical drive has gone faulty some how and are sending a new drive by post.
will reply with results when it has been fitted.

I believe the drive has gone faulty. I'll have to return it or get a replacement. It won't boot from CD @ F12 after restart. I tested the computer with an older drive that I had laying around and it worked just fine, so It's gotta be that the drive had gone bad.

The disks I used in it, however, are toast. Lots of lost data there. I'm going to give ISO Buster a crack at retrieving any data, but will have to use my old drive to do it, problem is my acer aspire m5630 has the power supply right behind the drive bays with no room. I'll have to practically dismantle everything to remove any cd/dvd drives or put a second drive in there (stupidest thing I ever saw).

Bottom Line: DO NOT USE VISTA BUILT-IN CD/DVD BURNING SOFTWARE. It blows! People in other forums had nothing but bad things to say about it and my experience is one of the reasons why.

First thing is to check the drive connections & cables.
Next, check the drive info in the BIOS.
3rd, try to use a DRY clean disc. Also try booting from the drive.
If all of them fails, test the drive in another computer (doublecheck the jumpers!).

hi i received the new optical drive different from the old one and installed it. it works fine now. wont be formatting any more discs.
get another drive on warranty.

Right guys
Been in touch with acer today and they sent me a fix for this problem of vista and cd/dvd rom not working
I used it today and everything working fine now .
It is a vista update problem so follow this link and follow instructions and you can fix your problem.
