    Hello,

    i have a compaq pressario 2100 laptop with a CD-ROM HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4240N.
    the CD ROM was working properly for the past year and half but a few days ago it just dissapeared from the windows explorer, and when i incert a CD it sounds like it start reading .... but with nothing happening.

    I have contacted HP which they advised me to download new drivers, firmware, to uninstal the CD ROM completely (so XP will load the drivers at restart) etc but non of these worked!!
    A message that i am getting on restart is: "windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware.The driver may be corrupt or missing (code 39)"

    After exchanging allot of email with HP I was finally advised to get the laptop for repair.

    Is there anyone that heard of a similar problem and can help?

    Thank you phil_ I will follow instructions ...
    I assume that despite the warning about modifing the registry I will not harm my laptop!
