this is my first post here, but I hope it will be usefull for most of you. I hacked the latest version of Panasonic DVD-RAM device driver to work with non-Panasonic DVD-RAM drives and tested with my LG 4120B drive. I will write below short tutorial how to make the hack.

First, you need to download XPUp5001NEN.exe - original Panasonic DVD-RAM device driver for WinXP from here: http://panasonic.co.jp/mke/support/d...oem/index.html
You also need I6Comp v0.20 - Install Shield v6.x CAB util, which you can find here:
ftp://ftp.externet.hu/pub/mirror/sac/pack/i6comp02.zip

When you run XPUp5001NEN.exe, it extracts the installation files to C:\Documents and Settings\xkodi\Local Settings\Temp\byeB.tmp\Disk1, (where "xkodi"="your_username" and "byeB.tmp", may be "byeE.tmp", "bye7.tmp", etc, you get the idea, the character after "bye" is hex digit) and runs the installation program from there. Then message box appears, that says "Error: Cannot get drive.", because we haven't Panasonic drives. Before you click "OK" and exit the installation you need to copy "Disk1" dir to C:\ . In "Disk1" there is a file DATA1.cab and also setup.exe file. The next few steps:
1) Extract and copy i6comp.exe from i6comp02.zip to "Disk1"
2) run "Command Prompt" (Start->Run->Open->"cmd"->OK)
3) type "cd C:\Disk1>"
4) type "i6comp x data1.cab"
Now you can find file "DVDDrive.ini" in "Disk1" dir.
5) Open DVDDrive.ini in Notepad and change line "DriveNameCheckMode=1" to "DriveNameCheckMode=0", save and exit Notepad
6) type "i6comp r data1.cab DVDDrive.ini" to replace DVDDrive.ini in DATA1.cab with our hacked version
7) Run "setup.exe" and install the driver.

If you think that it is too complicated, maybe I can upload the hacked version somewhere or maybe some of you will do it.

I made this because now I can work with my DVD-RAM discs like with slow hard disk. Panasonic DVD-RAM device driver allows you to format DVD-RAM disc with UDF 1.50, 2.00 or FAT32 filesystem. WinXP has native support to format DVD-RAM disc with FAT32 only, but with my LG drive with firmware A104, Windows fails with error, when I try to format MMORE 4.7GB 2.0X DVD-RAM disc. With Panasonic driver everything works like a charm and we can use not only FAT32, but UDF also and write files to DVD-RAM disc through Windows Explorer. I hope you enjoy that ...

I have tried the DVD RAM driver from Panasonic, and have given it up in favour of Nero's InCD which seems to be much more flexible.

It allows UDF 2.5 as well as the other mentioned here.

I've checked DVD-RAM driver that comes with Panasonic LF-M721JD (genuine retail package of SW9573C). I cannot find DVDDrive.ini in data1.cab. This driver works fine with GSA4120B and GSA4040B. Any modification is not required. I installed this DVD-RAM driver and Roxio drag-to-disc v7 together. Applying Roxio's DVD-RAM patch, both software become compatible. Panasonic driver is fast than D2D and InCD.

meiudf.sys version is 4.0.1.0

Diseree, it seems the version from their site is exactly the same as from your retail CD:

but it is protected and modification is required. So when new update is available and you haven't unprotected retail version on CD, then you can use the procedure above to use it with non-Panasonic drive.

I had problems with INCD and WinXP.
The discs seemed to format (took very little time, which seemed odd for a full format)
When writing to the disks after about 10min of burning the drive would turn off and a I still had a blank DVD-RAM disk.

I have since made a new driver out of bits @Panasonic using the above method.
Now I'm happily formatting and burning to DVD-RAM

I have a LG GSA-4165B, and the latest DVD-RAM driver can be found in first post here:

It's already been hacked and an error will occur when installing (at end) but it works.
You can now format in UDF 1.5/2. and FAT32, not as many options as INCD but they work.

Windows XP can write to DVD-RAM discs without any drivers or InCD - but only FAT32.

For small files (less than 50Mb), FAT32 is probably quicker than UDF.

Yes I tried it with the current Panasonic version and the current BHA Version and it did not work under WinXP or Win2k.
Here in this forum was an other guy who had it running with the Panasonic DVD RAM driver. This was an older version of the driver (Dated from 2004 I think) but I did not have time to check this with this older driver...

Well, I'm testing XP 64bit edition and downloaded the equivalent Panasonic driver. Then I followed xkodi's instructions to hack it and now it's all perfectly working... DVD-RAM@LG GSA-4166b.JPG

By the way, there are some other problems or bugs with the LG GSA-4166b that may occur: I had to connect it as a single (master) drive on one of my IDE strips. It didn't accept an other drive (BenQ/hacked Philips DVDR1620 as slave) beside itself. So I'm running the BenQ DW1620 on the 2nd IDE connection. Fortunately I don't need any of them for my hard discs, as htese are all SATA drives. But... maybe this should be discussed in another thread.

I suspect that it's pretty straightforward to add devices to the driver, but haven't had time to play around with this. I would also expect Panasonic to eventually release an updated version with more drives included.

I cannot find the original meiudf.sys. By the link mentionned it's only an updater no original driver. I have a LG 4167B and it seems I cannot burn on DVD-ram. The files are in abeyance to be burned. Not more! Thanks for your support.

Hi,

the files posted here (at least those mentioned in the first post) are full installers.
If you have a broadband internet connection, you may search toshiba website http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/t...su_sc_home.jsp There you will find a package of the DVD-RAM drivers. File size is 64 MB because it contains drivers for XP and W2k in different languages.

DVD-RAM normally is used different - you don't use burning software like Nero, but you just handle DVD-RAM like a floppy disc or a hard disk.

The problems you mention may be related to some packet writing software installed. If you want to use the DVD-RAM driver remove that software.

Yes. Mine works with a Pioneer 111, a Liteon 165P6S and an LG 4167 all on IDE.
