GSA-H31N help wont read DvDs tried Everything!!!!

ok so i have the HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H31N came in my dell xps 410 system now i have never realy used this drive i usualy stick with my Sony CdRw/Dvd CRX310S, ive had this comp for about 2 yrs burnt only 2 dvds during those 2 yrs well when i decided hey lets burn some movies i go to try and nothing it wont even detect a DVD of any sort in my drive drive is updated with latest firmware i even tried a crossflash with the h30N didnt fix the problem. I deleted my upper and lower fixes in my reg. IM at a loss here Imgburn says no medium present i go to my computer it says insert a disc(yes even with a disc in the drive) the drive plays and burns Cds with ease but cannot read dvds?When i freshly put a dvd in the drive spins and spins computer lags a lil then nothing it acts like its gonna load but doesnt i check the plugs there secure im at a loss here and dont realy want too get a new drive since this one is unused used maybe maybe 5 times. Any Help would be appreciated and i think would help alot of people out there as i see this isnt a uncommon problem. Im just hoping mines a easy fix if a fix at all.

the blanks im using are Maxell x16 4.7Gb also ive tried dvd-R, however it will not even read dvds of any sort but as soon as i put a cd in bam reads it right away

Check if the UDFS driver is loaded in Windows. This is the file system driver for reading DVDs.
I assume the CDFS driver is loading since you can read CDs.

Open System Information in Windows. < MSINFO32.EXE >
Expand "Software Environment" and click on 'System Drivers'.
Check status of UDFS.

ok i checked the udfs and status says ok under started it says NO and under start mode it says disabled state it says stopped

Open the registry editor. < regedit.exe >

Go to : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

Scroll down to Udfs. In the Right-hand panel double click "Start".
Change the "Value Data" to '2', (autostart)

Close regedit and reboot your PC.

FYI:

1 is boot

2 is autostart

3 is manual

4 is disable

i changed it on currentcontrol set however still not workin hmmm also could registry mechanic have anything too do with it as i have full version of this installed

I take it my drive is burnt up.. no good DEAD!!. i do notice that after i deleted my upper and lower filters they were never reinstalled after reboot?? is that a issue or is it not suppose too show back up?

Hi,

do i understand correctly, you cannot access any DVD disc in that drive? No factory made video DVD, and no data DVD?

If you have access to a working DVD burner and broadband internet, you may get a knoppix DVD image, burn to DVD and try to boot your computer from that disc. This should rule out any Windows related issues, at least with readability.
Maybe there is a friend who can help you with that disc.

thank you michael when i go to my parents i will have too use there burner and yes those are the symptoms i am having could u post a link too a website where i can find the knoppix DVD image also when i do this do i boot the cd in the drive i am having problems with? or my working drive

Hi,as already stated: www.knoppix.org The download link will offer you some FTP sites, and there is also a Torrent available. The DVD image is Knoppix-5.3.1
You can start with booting your problem drive. If that fails, then the drive is faulty. In case, it works, then shutdown and boot the disc from your other drive. You can then test not only the read but also the write capabilities with K3B, a Nero style CD/DVD burning application.

Your browser should then ask you where to save the file. Please note, a DVD image has about 4,5 GB, so a fast internet connection without volume limitation is highly recommended.

I have the HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H31N came in my hp-compaq d7700 system now i have never really used this drive for Data Write although i have used it alot for reading purpose where its been perfect, when i decided to burn some movies/music/mps i go to try and nothing workedout. it detects a Movies DVD/CD/MP3 of any sort in my drive and even play it, but I have been unable to burn even a single CD/DVD etc.
Any Help would be appreciated and i think would help alot of people out there as i see this isnt a uncommon problem. Im just hoping mines a easy fix if a fix at all.

might be a software problem, but your description isn't sufficient.
What software are you using for burning CD or DVD, and does this software have logging capabilities like Nerö or Imgburn?
