Welcome to the forum

Could be that the new firmware has issues with that particular mediacode (RICOHJPN-D01-67) - the only drive I own personally that'll burn those successfully is a Samsung 223F, and then at 6x, not the max 8x.

There are a couple of things you could try until other members chime in with their suggestions:

* Lower the burn speed to 6x or 4x
* Try a different brand of disc if you have any spare

Having virtual drive/emulation software installed can often screw things up a bit burning-wise, but if you had UltraISO or whatever installed before then I doubt that's the culprit.
However a last ditch option could be to uninstall it (and its associated drivers), and see if that fixes things. That often causes more issues than it fixes, so I'd only do that is nothing else helped.

I tried All the write speeds (8, 6 and 4) and it's likely not a software issue since the problem occurs both on Windows and Linux. I don't have any other DLs on me currently, so I can't verify if it's only this one type of disc. I burned a DVD+RW succesfully though.

Thanks for the answer anyway.

I've burned those successfully on this drive with 1.02 firmware. The only problem was that the disc would be readable by all DVD readers in my home except the one it was written on

I've also succeeded in writing them with my laptop's "TSSCORP" burner, I don't have the exact model currently though.

LOWest grade media, so no surprise.

I wonder if they are even good enough for a frisbee session.

They're also the CHEAPest And as I said, they work great with all the other drives in my home AND they can be burned fine with older firmware on this particular one.

And, what does that mean?

You can even burn the cheapeast crappo media without issues, but that doesnt mean it was a decent burn at all.....

If there are no issues with it, then I call it a decent burn

You'll learn it the hard way later on.

There's a reason for that, in this specific case.

The Omega brand, if it's the same one we've seen around the forum before, isn't above using low-grade media. They've used fake Taiyo Yuden, fake Verbatim/MCC, and fake Ricoh...and with fake Ricoh DL media, burns are rarely pretty. They also tend to cause problems such as what you see here.

If LG did its best to improve the write quality of REAL Ricoh DL media with a firmware update, they are understandably going to have no way of supporting the fake Ricoh, especially with manufacturing processes and quality varying so wildly.

So when _chef_ says you'll learn it the hard way, it's an actual warning. Don't trust this stuff. We know it's cheap, and we know that may be appealing, but if it has to be done, try to go for the good stuff; it reduces headaches both now and in the long run, especially when you're using a drive from a manufacturer that tunes its hardware for quality media.

Thanks for the warning and a good explanation. I didn't know there are fake DVD-Rs. To be honest I'm actually having less trouble with them than with the 3 times more expensive EMTEC discs I used to buy.

As for this particular issue I solved it by using a laser cleaning disc. Yes, I know.

Kudos to you for resolving to solve your issue. Sometimes it's the simple things that solve the actual problem. You have good ideas; we could use more heads like yours around the forums.
