The 4165B and 4167B look to be identical.
The 4167B, 4166B and 4163B specs are from LG website.
The online specs for the 4165B are wrong my drive is 170mm long, not 184.6mm as stated.

Id be annoyed if they substituted a different model without consultation.
How are the burns so far?
Ive just seen a 4167B review that shows worse performance on RICOH 16X media, and 8X RW media which is what I have.

I assume its OEM as it didn't come in a retail box, just the drive, audio cable and the CD wrapped in static proof bag.
The CD belongs with the drive as it has the manual for the 4165B on it.

These are the the apps that work with the Nero that came with drive:
Nero Express v6.6.0.9
Nero Burning ROM
Cover designer
Image
Backit up
Sound Track
Wave editor

Was I just lucky, or did I get the retail version with out the box ?

Yeah a fellow Kiwi, I don't feel so lonely now
Nice place you live, was there just last week, I'm up at Mt Cook.

My drive burns everything thrown at it, and is speedy.

One thing I noticed that when burning CD-R's Nero gets as far as the Leadin and then nothing happens, it seems as if the buffer is filled then the drive light just flashes but nothing is burned.
This is annoying, luckily I have another CDRW.
I'm not sure wether this is Nero or the drive causing the problem.
As making disc-at once disks works fine.

I wasn't too displeased with the 4165B being sent instead of the 4163B as I can now burn -R DL.

Have you tried many brands of DVD R media? Do you use DVD RW media at all? If so, which DVD RW brand do you use that works well in the 4165?

I checked on the Nero section at the Ahead web site last week and I didn't see support for the 4165 listed. I wonder if that might be why you were having some problems with writing to CD-Rs. The link is here:

I have tried all but DVD-R DL media, Verbatim, Imation and no brand cheapies.
All burned without problems at their rated speeds.
I was able to burn an Imation DVD-R 8x disc @ 12x, Nero detected it as 12x and it worked just fine.

Also that list of drives is only applicable to nero 5.x as v6+ has smart detect and will detect the drives settings and make adjustments accordingly.

I do hope that it is a Nero problem and will be fixed in newer versions.

Quote:
Supported Recorders

All CD, Combo and DVD recorders manufactured since 1997 should be supported by Nero 6.0.0.0 and higher through our SmartDetect™ technology. SmartDetect™ will automatically detect and install new drives. The version numbers listed under "supported since" indicate the version from which the drive was officially entered into Nero´s internal drive database. However, thanks to SmartDetect™ technology, even if a drive has not been registered, it should still be supported.
Some drive models ship under more than one model name or are sold by more than one manufacturer. Even if your drive's model or manufacturer is not listed, Nero 6.0.0.0 should support it.

Hope this helps.
Btw, this is pretty much the same thing I got with the boxed version of the 4163B about a year ago. There was no auto update firmware program of course, because that did not exist yet at the time. The only other things included were an IDE cable, audio cable and some screws. So you're getting about the same thing as comes with the boxed version.

The version of Nero included was indeed Nero Express so I doubt if you're going to get the full version. Still, it's about the best software bundle you can get bundled with a drive, IMHO.

Mobilenvidia - you might try some Ricoh media. Ive ordered some from trademe (a couple of major media dealers are on there), which I will test in my LiteOn soon.
There is a lot of 8x and 16x Ricoh media for ~$1NZ per disk, or less in quantity.
The big sellers usually post the media codes.

I got a heap of 16x Verbatim DVD+R's from Ascent these are good for me.
Cost me just over a buck each, I like these as they were the only 16x media I could find.

Hey whats the media code for those verbatims?
Well if you run out, try looking for JerryDVDDiscs on trademe.
The 50 spindle of Ricoh 16x were $NZ50 +5 shipping.

My LiteOn @832S has this to say about the Ricoh 8x Golden Tops:
Note that this is my old burner and cant do 16x.
Ive just flashed the drive up, and erased the learnt media in the eeprom, so I need to make a few burns before I judge it.

Getting a little off topic, but as I cant find the LG burner I wanted, ive ordered a NEC 3540A - from a place in Nelson.
The old LiteOn is not great at 8x burns. I need to try some 6x.
