I really tried to like this drive. But since I don't use DVD-RAM, and the burn quality while fast is quite worse with quality media than my NEC-3500 and BenQ 1620, I am thinking of selling the drive or keeping it as a spare in case one of my other drives bite the dust. It's an ok drive, just not as good as my NEC or BenQ.

@Bandenq
Just like many people do, you forget to mention what exactly the LG burns worse than BenQ and NEC. I happen to own all three, and using good quality Verbatim and TY media, I find no major differences in burn quality between all three. If any, the LG has the edge, then BenQ, then NEC. It is hard to say, because the difference between media from the same spindle is greater than the difference between hardware.
I dropped the NEC on a shelf because it was no better than the others and did not offer any advantages (no error reports, no DVD-RAM).

I use mainly TY and Maxell, both -\+R's. My NEC and BenQ both burn this media much better than the LG. I've been burning discs since my first burner cost me $250.00 and media was $3.00 a disc. My LG has no advantage on any of my burns. It's always around a 92 to 93 where my BenQ and NEC are at 97-98 in CDSpeed. I've had discs show a 93 and skip like crazy. I've had lower scores with cheaper media in my NEC and it plays flawlessly in all my players. I'm not bad-mouthing the LG, it's a fine drive, just not for me.

Thanks for explaining. I guess the standalone you use plays a role too. My Philips 630/631 and Lenco DVD-02/A always play whatever I feed them, even if it shows up as a coaster in CD DVD Speed. (With one exception: most DL media, except for Verbatims, do not play at all or skip like mad.)

I have a system with PIII 450Mhz/460MB/Windows 2000. It works fine for me.

What you might probably need is more RAM since 256MB is not enough for WinXP... not only for good DVD-writing performance but for general good performance of your system.

Hi, I wonder if you can help. I have just installed a new LG GSA-4163B burner in my PC, replacing an older Matshita SW-9571.

I'm using Nero 6.6.0.16 (latest version)

When I copy CDs (directly) the copy is scattered with digital pops. Sometimes as many as 4 or 5 in a 30 minute recording. This happens on my new LG. It also happened on my old Matshita. It seems to have started when I installed the latest version of Nero.

Burning discs from files on the HD *seems* to work ok.

I rolled Nero back to my original config (6.3.1.25) using Nero's own Clean Tool but the problem persists.

I've tried several different brands of disc including Taiyo Yuden and TDK. Same result.

Does anybody know what might be causing this if not the burner or the discs? Could Nero have corrupted any of my files? I've run disc defragmenter several times. Could it be the cable or something?

Grateful for any advice! Thanks!

John

I have a GSA-4163B /w A105. Its a great drive but there are some of my complaints:

1) Slow at reading (compared to my samsung DVD-rom and Toshiba 5372V)
2) Some discs rated at 8x burns at 4x.
3) no quality check

Aside from those, its a very good writer. I've yet to have a coaster after 2 months and 50 DVDs (good and cheap media).

However, i'm considering on getting a sony 810 drive (benq 1640 oem) and sell the LG. Think this is a good choice?

Upon testing ritek 16x dvd+r's/R04's I found the LG 4163B's A105 firmware seriously
flawed at 4x burning, coaster city, testing TYG01's on NEC 3520/3.05 and LG.
NEC has no problem with the ritek media at 4x, but quality is slightly lower than
at 8x. But here's the poop, I just flashed the LG to a new nec(oem) firmware
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B>Version: AN16
4x is still a flop on ritek, but 16x got better, even better than 8x burning.

I had planned on retiring this burner(50 disks burned) but I
need a locked reader to pair with my hacked nec 3520's
and now that I have to option to burn this well and fast
on cheaper media, it get's a stay of execution, vbg!
