It supports bitsetting for SL and DL +R.

Bitsetting for -R is impossible right now.

Re: Cdfreaks presents LG GSA-4163B review

I bought one of these drives for a friend the other day but hooked it up to upgrade the firmware and burnt a couple of discs just to make sure everything was working okay.
I've got to say the burns were as good if not slightly better than my NEC 3500 _ and that was using CMC MAG E01!
No hesitation in recommending this drive.
The review reckons the black tray delivers better quality burns _ the one I bought happens to be black.
One question?
The PC I placed this drive in is quite old. HP Slot 1 400Mhz Celery, 256M and XP Pro SP2.
Setting the write speed to MAX in CloneDVD achieves a write speed of 4x which burned successfully.
If I force the speed to 8X am I likley to encounter buffer underuns and bad burns as a result?

Re: Cdfreaks presents LG GSA-4163B review

Try simulation on Nero Burning Rom. It does not actually write to the disk. Or have an 8x DVD+RW media. Or test the "Cache" speed in Nero Burning Rom's preferences menu. Or run Create Data Disc tests in Nero CD-DVD Speed 3.61. There are lots of other ways to find out whether your PC can support 8x to 16x DVD burning.

Re: Cdfreaks presents LG GSA-4163B review

Hi, I hope someone here can help me. Although it doesn't say it uses Mac OSX as an OS, will my computer recognize the LG GSA-4163B?

I have Toast 6. I know some drives can be seen and used by Mac, although they don't list it as a recognized OS. Thanks for your help

Re: Cdfreaks presents LG GSA-4163B review

I don't see why it shouldn't. After all, Apple was one of the very first companies that included DVD writers standard into their personal computers. Don't Apple computers also use optical drives with IDE or SCSI interfaces?

@Kenshin
For shure the LG will work as a reader but I don't think support will be implemented in burning software.

Latest Apple computers sold in South Korea have only 8x DVD writers.

Re: Cdfreaks presents LG GSA-4163B review

Yesterday my friend said that he got a GSA-4163B for $67

Is this drive worth to buy, or should I get an Asus, BenQ, LiteOn or NEC for me. I got at least $100 on budget

thanks

Save your pennies and get the LG. Good price and good drive that produces high quality burns.
The fact it does DVD-RAM is neither here nor there.

Re: Cdfreaks presents LG GSA-4163B review

DimeDevil,

DVD-RAM media speed is going to be much faster this year.

DVD-RAM is the most accurate and stable, has the longest lifetime, and is the most capable DVD media - you can rewrite it up to 100,000 times, and it has error checking.

Here is an informative link:http://www.ramprg.com/en/a/main.htm

As far as quality and speed goes, they don't always go together, but I believe the 4163B has both.

I think the 4163B is the best all-around drive available.

Just my opinion.

Re: Cdfreaks presents LG GSA-4163B review

If you are like me and have space for only 1 optical drive then go for the LG, it is currently about the best all round drive available.

If you have room get several drives: The Pioneer 108 will write cheap crappy media better than any other and will overspeed some media, the LG GSA-4163 will write decent media quicker than any other with superb quality and supports DVD-RAM and is excellent at DAE and can backup protected audio/game discs, the BenQ DW1620 is an excellent writer, will overspeed lots of media and has error scanning capabilities.

It all really depends on what you need from your drive!

Re: Cdfreaks presents LG GSA-4163B review

Like I said before, I dont need DVD RAM because it's hard to find here. My main reason is to backup all of my data, backup all of my DVD9 movies and storing my DV. I rarely use the + and -RW too, because mainly, I burn all my data on +Rs (love those bitsetting thingy)

I haven't seen any reviews for the 1640 yet so I couldn't say how good it is. Maybe try the Philips/BenQ forum and see if anyone has tried one.

We reviewed the Philips DVDR1640P in September 2004, and can be found here: http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/152

Re: Cdfreaks presents LG GSA-4163B review

Even though this is a two sheep burner, it fails on the SafeDisk 2.9 and 3 Sheep tests.

Are there any ways that the high SafeDisk protected CD's can be backed up with this recorder or is that a complete no no? I this is true then would the only way to achive such a task would be to get another recorder?

Re: Cdfreaks presents LG GSA-4163B review

I also want to get this drive. The main reason is that I want to replace my Pioneer DVR-109 which has a problem recognizing my TDK 2x media. It only burns them at 1x. So I'm afraid that later if I buy other disks it could have the same problem with them. I heard a lot of good stuff about Pioneer, but at this point I want a drive that will be reliable and about 8x. I'll finish these 2x DVD-R blanks, and going to buy faster ones from now on. I don't want to pay for 8x media and be only able to burn them at 1x or so.

Are other drives LG GSA-4163B in particular, have this recognition problem? In other words is this a common problem across all DVD burners or just has to do with media?

ufo, (nice handle)

I don't believe that you will have a problem with the LG 4163B.

I really like mine.

Re: Cdfreaks presents LG GSA-4163B review

Hey folks,

I'm sorry to say that I got a lot of problems using Ricoh-DL media! Burnt 3 frisbees in a row with Nero 6.6.0.6, which always started burning but could not finish even one of them. The progress bar stopped between 0% to 33% and then ... nothing else happened.
Had to stop Nero in the task manager.
