16x DVD-R at 16x, hopeful. Just 19 PIE max and 4 PIF max. Also jitter max 11.5 (not that high for 5:16.)

Yes, actually Quikee's 5:16 result a very high quality burn, same with KTL's

I sense that Quikee is trying another MCC03RG20 to beat 5:15.
Maybe Kenshin can start a "dare" thread here in LG forum.

Hehe.. actually I'm not.. I'm happy with a second place. =) Also MCC03RG20 disc are quite expensive (16€ for 25). I don't want to waste them anymore. =)

Well a "dare" thread for LG would be quite difficult to mantain as LG drives can't do PI/PIF.. so other drives would be used.. but other drives aren't compareable with each other. =)

BenQ-scans are most useful I think as very many people who watch these threads have at least one BenQ 1600/1610/1620/1625/1640 and the graphs are intuitive enough and show writing patterns, PIE/PIFs, jitters, and so on. LG should learn that anyone who wants to "scan" a LG-burned disk would want to buy a BenQ drive additionally.

Best probably for you to start one unless I dare to create a whole new FTP/HTTP for everyone to use for posting scan results (which I'm afraid would take too much time for me.) For the last several months, you are best suited for such works (I mean managing write quality scans.) You already beat me, Jan70, OC-Freak, eleewhlm, and all others on the very first day of ownership.

My 4163 is from the same production line (Feb 2005 Korea).
But I use my 5163 at the moment, which is from Dec 2004, also Korea, original firmware A100 flashed to A104.
My MCC03RG20 scans still do not improve at 16x. This disc was approved for 16x writing by Qscan in my BenQ.
I will put my 4163 back in to see if it makes a difference with these media.

Another rarety... (at least in Europe)
HP branded MCC003 (Made in Singapore)
For some unknown reason LG decided to burn the disc at 6x (I had max selected in Nero CD/DVD Speeed).
Ignore 18 Jitter spike.. I rescanned the beginning and it was gone. =P

GSA-4163/5163 does that with some 8x DVD+R media sometimes. Instead of 12x, 6x is chosen. The firmware seems to have instructions to write at 6x to some 8x DVD+R media capable of 12x in LG when they don't meet certain criteria. LG people told us about it but not the details. LG thinks it's to maintain writing quality but the firmware's clearly oversensitive.

Heh.. such a mechanism is usually a shot in the back. My first MCC003 was certantly lower quality than this one but the drive decided it can be burned at 12x. =) Anyway.. no harm done.

Back to burning.. another "oldie" =)
RICOJPNR01
Burned at 4x.

This is my last RICOHJPNR01 disc ever.. I had only troubles with them so I'm happy I've got rid of them. =)

During my test (took 2 days), I've also encountered some 8x +R media only burns @6x.
- CMCMAGE01
- MAXELL002
- MBIPG101R04
- MCC003
- TY02

I don't know why but turning off the pc for 5 minutes solve the problem. Probably the drive is running hot? I read that setting the burning program to high priority solve the problem but I haven't try it yet.

YUDEN000T02 (1158)
Burned at 8x

Hmm.. jitter at 8x is high in ~12%.. also saw this in zevia's YUDEN000T02 burned at 12x.. but jitter on his scan fell after the drive switched from 8x to 12x. Maybe it's better to burn this discs at 12x? Have to try it when I have something more to burn. =)

Almost halfway through the spindle, my MCC03RG20 are getting better. I burned this one at 8x, and it still shows that PIE spike, but 30 PIF's total is great.

Hi, everyone!
I just brought 2 LG4163B, Both of them were made at Apr.2005 with firmware A104.
One drive is connected to computer with a USB2.0 external device, and the other is connected with IDE cable.
I burned two Mitsubishi MCC003 DVD+R at 12x respectively with both drives, and performed quality scan with my Plextor712A. I got terrible results!
What's wrong? Any suggestion? Thanks very much!

That Sony one is an awesome burn. Better than the TY IMO, are Sony disc's an expensive media?

The Sony scan is on a Lite-On, can't compare it directly with a BenQ/Philips scan. It may be very good but I doubt it is better than TY.

I think Sony disc aren't even close to TY or MCC. =) I tried both SONY08D1 and SONY16D1 in the past and they were only average like TDK discs.

Some Sony media cost more than typical Taiyo Yuden and Mitsubishi media but Sony also outsourced media production especially to BenQ/Daxan of Taiwan so Sony media no more cost more than TDK.
