I recently purchased an Insignia DVD/VHS Combo Recorder. I have the following setup: RCA 52 inch Projection TV. No Coax hookup in the back. DirectTV HD receiver Insignia DVD/VHS Combo unit Recorder. I have not been able get my new DVD/VHS to successfully record to DVD while watching a program. I know that I do not have that piece set up properly. I am able to watch a movie on the DVD/VHS combo but need help setting up to Record and then watch. My current setup is as follows: Satellite Coax Cable that comes into the house to the Sat/IN Coax on my DTV HD Receiver. Composite Video Cables from the DTV HD Receiver(Component Video Out) to the(Component Input- CMP1) on the back of the RCA HD Monitor. Audio(White and Red) Cables from the DTV HD Receiver to the CMP1 L and R audio input jacks on the back of the RCA HD Monitor. Audio Video Out Jacks(Red, White and Yellow) from the AV Out on the Insignia DVD/VHS Combo unit to the VID1 Input of the RCA HD Monitor. I am able to watch DTV by using my HD DTV Receiver Remote to change the input mode to CMP1. I can change the Input modes by using my HD Receiver Remote to flip thru the various modes on my TV. (CMP1, Front, VID1, VID2) - The Front and VID1 and VID2 all are also SVIDEO capable but I am using the normal audio video cables at this point. I can watch DTV by switching to the CMP1 mode on my RCA HD Monitor. I can watch movies on my DVD/VHS Recorder by switching to the VID1 mode on my RCA HD Monitor. I only need the last piece of the puzzle. I want to be able to Record from the channel that I am watching to my DVD/VHS Recorder. I also would like to be able to Record one channel while watching another. Any help would be greatly appriciated, Thanks, Mick every_thing_freezes@yahoo.com

the only way i've ever heard of this working well is using a capture card (ati, or the Hauppauge) to grab the video you want, then convert it using WinAVI (or something similar), and then burn to DVD. This setup works best under XP, though i have a few friends who sucessfully capture anything DirectTV has to offer. Or so i am told....

mick3724, I have a similar setup to yours, except my DirectV Receiver is the HD/DVR. Differences are that I have an HDMI output running to my HD monitor and red/white audio a/v and svideo running to my DVD recorder. In order for me to record on my DVD recorder from my HD/DVR receiver, I have to toggle the output on the DirectV receiver from 1080i down to 480. Otherwise, there is no signal output over the Svideo. Don't know if that's your issue, but it could be.

Your DTV box has a SVHS output that will deliver the best picture quality to your DVD recorder, but the yellow composite video will also work. It's not clear in your post, but I assume that the DVD recorder has video inputs of some type, hopefully one of the above. So you simply need to connect those and set the DVD to the correct input to watch and record from that input. Now, not all HD satellite boxes can output both DVI/HDMI and analog video at the same time, but most DTV boxes have been able to do so, you will need to confirm this. Also, the aspect ratio and formatting of the analogue output will need to be set correctly for the source material being watched. With SD channels, it won't matter but with HD chanells it will. I use the "stretch" function on my HD receiver to output a squeezed, downsampled HD picture to my DVD recorder via SVHS. The results are pretty good, and then I set my monitor to stretch this image to full 16:9 when watching it off the DVD.
