Replacement DVD Drives (in good condition) for 2002 vintage Panasonics are hard to come by. Panasonic's National Parts Center still lists the DVD Drive for your DMR-HS2 as VXY1748 DVD RAM DRIVE $691.10. But see this post at the AVS forum:Quote:[qanda]I am having the classic U11 problem again, and cleaning does not fix it.

You didn't mention what kind of "cleaning" you performed. Often a Panasonic DVD Drive needs cleaning of the rubber hub atop the spindle to restore functionality. Lens cleaning discs do not clean the rubber hub. See this thread for more information:

See this post for additional information and photos showing the older style DVD Drive used before 2006:

The DMR-HS2 Operating Instructions have this information concerning the U11 error:
U11
NO DISC
≥The disc is dirty or badly scratched.
–Clean the disc if it is dirty.
– The disc cannot be played if it is scratched and this display doesn’t disappear.
≥You have inserted a disc the unit cannot play or record on.
– Insert a disc the unit can play or record on.
≥Cleaning has been carried out using DVD-RAM/PD lens cleaner.
➜ Cleaning is finished. Press [< OPEN/CLOSE] and remove the disc cleaner from the disc tray.
More information concerning cleaning discs is found on page 10 of the DMR-HS2 Operating Instructions. -

I did the hub cleaning.
Discs are new and clean.
Sorry for recently posting a dup thread for this question, I forgot I had done this on this forum two weeks ago.
Replacement drive is over $600?!?! Yeesh. I suppose that's the price they'll quote if I send it in to their repair center? -

They say they fix it, but calling the parts center (to save me sending the thing to TX for weeks) I find the drive is still $491 !! Yowtch!
Mebbe someone here whos hard disc has failed and does not want to replace it could sell me their dvd drive ... -

The "Panasonic National Parts Center" is where local repair shops and the general public may purchase Panasonic Parts. The parts center has little to do with the McAllen Texas operation.Quote:They say they fix it, but calling the parts center (to save me sending the thing to TX for weeks) I find the drive is still $491 !! Many make a mistake when they assume that replacing parts at the actual parts and labor rate will save them money. If price is no object one may go ahead and purchase parts outright, or take your machine to a local repair shop, or specify a repair at the actual parts and labor rate. The parts center and local shops are not satisfactory options.
When contacting the Panasonic Customer Service Center in McAllen Texas parts prices are of no concern as they will provide a quote for a flat-rate repair/exchange based upon your model and the state where you're located. Parts, labor and return shipping are included in the flat-rate they quote.
I was quoted $140 for the exchange of a 2006 DMR-ES46V shipped to Oregon. If the ES46 had been my only machine the $140 flat-rate exchange would be a reasonable expenditure. I currently own sixteen functional Panasonics so I declined the flat-rate exchange.
For those wanting ATSC/clear QAM HDD/DVD recorders the Philips 3575/3576 and Magnavox 2080/2160 are the only ones meeting that criteria. I own one each of those models.
