Streaming Media Players and Standalone Players/Recorders Discuss, DVD recorders+ hard drives at Home Entertainment forum; I'm looking to replace my phillips dvdr70, and I've noticed a lot of newer dvd recorders come with a hard drive. What is the advantage of having a HDD.?? Thanks Steve

    Hi sph70
The main advantage is that you record to the hd and can pause the recording to answer the telephone or nature. You can also record a program and delete it if you do not wish to see it again or you can burn a copy to dvd.
I've recently bought an LG 7500 with an 80 gig hd and am still getting to grips with it, but over all I am pleased with it's performance to date and there is a hack to make it region free.

Pausing playback is not a function exclusive to HDD units. You can do that with DVD playback just the same. I expect you meant to say that you can use "chase play" so that you can pause playback even if the programme is still recording.

Some HDD recorders also allow you to edit the material before archiving it to DVD. However such editing is inferior to doing it on the PC.

True, but some Recorders (Pioneer) without HDD are capable of "Chase Play" as well.

I did not want to influence you, but I would not buy a unit with HDD. Much money for almost nothing.
