possibility for anydvd as a U3 program?

AnyDVD Discuss, possibility for anydvd as a U3 program? at Movie copy software forum; ok i had no idea what u3 was. I just bought a USB flash drive with U3 on it, and I pretty much think it's the greatest invention ever. I think the NEXT greatest thing would be to release a u3 anydvd program this means i could backup my dvds

this means i could backup my dvds from anywhere. anydvd already allows users with multiple computers to transport the license so I don't imagine this would violate any fundamental licensing regulations that slysoft has.

here's a link to what U3 is for those that don't know: http://www.u3.com/default.aspx

and here's a link to the developer package just in case slysoft sees this thread : http://www.u3.com/developers/

james, if you're out there,

the only downside to u3 is that you cannot download it onto existing devices. it must be purchased with the hardware. It seems pretty new so my guess is at some point in the future it will be available for sale.

openoffice, firefox, thunderbird, and a lot more are already available as u3 programs. c'mon slysoft, make it happen!

(as if you guys didn't have enough to do already)

ok i'm a little less brainwashed by the U3 site now, and after a little more thinking I guess the U3 people basically just trademarked an OS for portable applications, but i still think it's cool and I'm still pushing for a portable version of anydvd whether it's U3 or not

That's just USB that is 1 - 4 gig's on it and they're quite expensive too. Any dvd to avi or mpeg conversion will do this.

what? i'm not sure what you're trying to say.

in regards to cost, i just bought a 1GB sandisk cruzer micro with U3 for under $30

and i'm nto saying to rip the dvd to the drive itself...just have the program launch from the drive as a portable app

also, what are you referring ot when you say that "any dvd to avi or mpeg conversion will do this"

will do what?

Well if you get the 1 gig it's somewhat cheap. I was looking at the 3 and 4 gig which ran around 175 to 200 USD. What I ment on the conversion there is programs to turn a dvd format to mpeg or avi or divix type format then there is alot less space taken on the video. 1 gig you'd only be ably to put one travel video on it so I was looking at the other sizes.

i wasn't talking about ripping video to the flash drive.

i was talking about launching anydvd from the flash drive so you can have its functionality anywhere on any of your computers via the usb drive WITHOUT installation (comes in handy on shared or public computers). you don't need 4GB to run anydvd!

portable apps are nothing new, but i think U3 is onto something. by creating a user interface that is so simple and so fmailiar (looks just like the XP start menu) they're going to bring portable apps on flash drive into the mainstream.

it's not necessary to use U3 but it's easy and it looks nice (sort of like the difference between linux and windows )

besides, i'm sure you can put regular portable apps onto the flash drive that aren't U3 based.

pshh that's for them to figure out. i'm no programmer!

i have no idea if it's feasible or not which was why i posed the question/suggestion to begin with. there's quite the range of programs already available including audio and video encoders and converters so I figured it wouldn't tbe THAT far out of the question.

are you syaing that it isn't possible?

That would be a great idea. Though I would like to be able to use it on my external HDD. There have been a few times when I've needed AnyDVD but couldn't. I've thought of bring it along but in fear of getting my key stolen.

Don't be silly, this will never happen.

How many people would actually *P - A - Y* for this? Not many thats for sure, wouldn't even be worth the time for slysoft to program it all.

It would be totally impractiacal for countless reasons if it were cost effective or not...

can you please list these reasons beacuse they're not so obvious to me.

also, i'd pay for it as would those that routinely use multiple systems I'd imagine.

This can't work...not that it isn't a good idea. However, AnyDVD gets installed as a kernel mode driver as far as I understand it. Just launching it from a usb drive isn't enough...it has to hook the OS at a very deep level to provide the insanely kuel functionality that it provides. Now, CloneDVD.....THAT could be possible.

Why can't this work there are programs to fit on a flash drive that can hold an OS now. I seen one the other day that was windows XP.

So you're suggesting that Slysoft create an entire WinXP "lite" to ship on a usb device for the sole purpose of ripping DVD's with AnyDVD?

this was more an explanation that i was looking for. at least you backed up up with somewhat of a fact (hehe not that i could verify it or not because i'm not that technical, but i trust you and it seems to make sense!)

just saying "it's not possible for obvious reasons" is a condescending and suspicious explanation that makes me think the person doesn't know what they're talking about. backing up with actual reasons is always much better.

Nonetheless, don't even take my word for it. If you're serious about this idea, talk to the source...talk to James. He'll probably tell you the same thing, but, it's good to get confirmation. I'm just basing this on what I've read in other threads from other knowledgable users like Tru. I just don't see how a USB based version of AnyDVD could work with an "installed on the hard drive" operating system. Dr Who's idea of having a WinPE type usb device is more plausible, but, I don't know if Slysoft would spend the resources to do that. And it would be a separate OS, not integrating with the OS on your hard drive. The DVD Fab Decrypter idea would work because it does NOT work the same way as AnyDVD. Whereas AnyDVD hooks into the kernel to provide very low level driver functionality so that it can work with ALL applications, DVD Fab Decrypter is a high level application that's self contained and doesn't hook the OS in any way as far as I know. But, um, AnyDVD is better by design.
