Please Help: Don't die without telling me where you're going

can't finish ripping this movie:

i'm using AnyDVD (HD) 6.4.5.4 beta by itself or together with DVD decrypter.
i've tried 4 discs already, on several drives (Liteon, Optirac, Toshiba, Panasonic), and everytime i get a CIRC error in the same spot. here is what DVD Decrypter reports:

needless to say, i cleaned the discs, even tried to resurface them with SkipDoctor.

anybody has any idea what the problem is?

How about downloading the newer version for public. They have 6.4.5.5 out now...give that a try and see if it fixes your error....

i've upgraded to AnyDVD (HD) 6.4.5.5 and the problems still persists. every disc that i've tried so far fails at 30% of extraction.

a very interesting observation: the disc does *NOT* play on the pc (used Media Player Classic), it locks up at about the position where i get the error when ripping. however, it *DOES* play on a standalone DVD player (there is a short glitch where the error should be, but ignores it and goes on to play fine).

could this be a different form of copy protection that anydvd/dvd43 are not aware of, or just a manufacturing error?

Since it plays fine on the stand alone player I say it's a bad disc.

keep in mind that 4 discs in a row have the same problem.

also, a disc that plays in a standalone but doesn't on a computer? i thought this smells strongly of copy protection.

When you say 4 disks in a row do you mean the same title? If so are they all from the same place? If so I agree with Dr. Who bad source disk. Most standalone players will ignore read errors that your PC will not. 2nd clue the "glitch" on the standalone where it fails on the PC.

Added: Try ripping it with just Dvd Decrypter- this is an old title should not have squat for copy protection

no, dvd decrypter by itself does not work either, hangs when it gets to the problem area.

but i am happy to report that i found a solution: dvdfab platinum 5.0.5.0. it managed to rip the whole movie and i can now watch it from the hard drive. it still has a "glitch" where the error was, but it's playable.

it might or might not be a crappy press. i am however pleased that i can now watch it.

If DVD Decrypter had a problem by itself and with AnyDVD then the problem, IMHO, is the disc. I'm going to assume that DVDFab Decrypter is simply skipping over the error which means the backup is flawed.

I'm going to have to go with the disc being bad especially because the bad spot is in the same location with multiple drives. What happens if you just use the AnyDVD ripper to try to rip the disc? You could always create logs and see if a read error pops up in them.

no error pops when creating a log file.
scanning the disc with Nero CD-DVD Speed shows 1 bad block and 2 damaged blocks. so most likely bad disk(s).
