I really haven't seen playability issues, however, and TRT's seem O.K. so maybe it's a scanning anomaly. I'll stick to +R for the 116 and use the 115D for -R in the interim.
Just a quick question, but one of the problems I noticed with some DVR-115/215s (and previous models) was the PIF clumping that occurs at the beginning of burns on MCC 03RG20. Fixing it required a strat swap. It seems that the DVR-116/216 finally has a proper strategy for Verbatim 16x DVD-R, (even as it evidences the other problems with DVD-R that have been discovered)?

I recently got a 116DBK, updated firmware to 1.09, and am very happy with it so far. After looking at some of the 116D v1.09 scans posted by other members, I have a couple questions. I am getting what I concider to be high jitter results from my scans(Nero CD/DVD Speed 4.7.7.16 / scans done on my iHAP422)...averages from 10.66 to 12.10 with one exception of a 20x burn that yielded a jitter average of 8.73. This was done with Verbatim DVD-R and +R (MCC 03RG20 and MCC 004) from 8x to 20x, with and without Optimal Write Speed Utility on.

So, my first question is what could cause high jitter results?

Also, I see a lot of the scans posted here that have PIE averages equaling 0.xx. The PIE averages produced by my 116DBK are the best I've ever had, ranging from 1.81 to 2.19 using the same media I'm seeing others getting 0.xx results.

So, my second question is why are some able to produce burns with very low PIE averages, while others get higher PIE averages using the same media? Is it mostly a result of the differences between computers the 116D/DBK are mounted in? Or are there other settings or conditions which contribute to the burn quality?

Like I mentioned earlier, I really like my 116DBK. It's producing burn qualtiy better than any burner I've had. Heck, PIE averages are at least a quarter of what I was getting out of my iHAP422. I'd really like to learn and understand how to get the most out of my 116DBK.

Thanks for the information.

These later LiteOn drives calculate a "different" jitter from the traditional go-to scanning drives [the BenQs and older LiteOns]. Jitter on the DH20A3 and iHAP/iHAS drives will be displayed very differently from jitter on BenQ DW1640/DW1620 and LiteOn DH20A4/LH20A1/6S/5S drives.

Different batches of media will perform differently, as you know. Some batches of Verbatim's 16x disc models will have high PIE and a few more PIF [still very good], while others will be of pristine quality [like the ones you may have seen throughout this thread].

Also, do note that, again, scanning drives do make a difference, and even no two of the same model report exactly the same. Imagine the differences between drive models.

So don't get discouraged because you can't get the quite pristine burns; I have a feeling that your burns can still easily make plenty of people jealous.

Thanks for the info and the additional persepective to go with it! I have to admit when my last dvd burner stopped working, I wasn't sure what my expectations should be for it's replacement. It was 4-5 years old and I remember thinking technologies change, for better or worse. I bounced back an forth between the iHAP422 and the 116DBK, ultimately, choosing the iHAP422 because scanning was supported with it. I wanted that feature to help me determine which media and speed would produce the best chance for quality burns on that drive(long story short, my last drive was incredibly picky). Shortly after installing the iHAP, my wife noted how much louder the dvd-rom drive was now that we had something that was much quieter to compare it to. So, I took advantage of the oportunity and instead of getting another dvd-rom, I got the 116DBK and compared the two. Now, my setup is the iHAP422 to serve as a dvd-rom of sorts and the 116DBK for burning. The 116DBK has proven, in my situation, to provide much better burns not only in quality scans, but, visually the playback is better on both of our stand alone dvd players. The iHAP422 is the workhorse of my setup now, playing cd's and dvd's cleaner than our old dvd-rom and doing it quietly while allowing me to still scan burned discs. Where the iHAP really shines is ripping. It is nothing short of excellent. So, when you mentioned about getting discouraged, you actually reminded me that I have a much better system than I've ever had. Thank you Albert!

I don't understand what is the best speed write for

HW: 116
FW: 1.09
MID: MKM 003 (Verbatim DVD+R DL)

Write Speed: 4x

(the same)
Write Speed: 2.4x

In 2.4x speed case there is smaller PIE max, avg and total (and the read of PIE is not very true on NEC/Optiarc drives) but higher PIF.
In 4x speed case there is smaller PIF avg and total but higher PIE avg, max and total.
Obviously PIF is more important thing to have smaller, but PIF avg 0.01 and PIF total 2260 are not bad values in 2.4x speed case.

Unfortunately I can't do my analysis with a Benq or Liteon or Plextor drives...
In your opinion what is the best choice?
Excuse me for my bad English and TNX in advance
