Although the Firmware and Kernel files are listed as DVR-A15J after the Flashing procedures the Drive is recognized as a DVR-115L. I patched the DVR-A15J Firmware with the MCSE Increase Read Speed/RPC-1/Enable BitSetting patches and using DVRFlash v2.5 flashed the DVR-A15J Firmware and Kernel to my DVR-115D and now I have a DVR-115L with DVD-RAM/Label Flash and MCSE patches.

    Hi
The original post relates more to the RAM aspect.
    Along with LF of course.

    @ humeyboy,

I believe the DVR-A15-J “The Other 2 Features” you are referring to are “PureRead” and “PowerRead”.

Rumor is that the DVR-A15-J’s PureRead and PowerRead features are Hardware dependant.

    @ troy512,

The referenced (http://labelflash.jp/enjoy/softdl.html) LabelFlash software will work.

There is also other LabelFlash software available listed under the heading “Applications” ->

I can't for the life of me crossflash my new DVR-115D to DVR-A15-J (DVR-115L)! Using the command line (with DVRFlash and the two A15-J f/w files) from your link: DVRFlash.exe -vff F: [my drive letter] A0414430.118 "A0414431.118 I keep receiving the same error message:

    Reading firmware 'A0414430.118'...

and following the usual disclaimer about not being responsible for trashing my drive y/n, I get:

firmware is of Kernel type (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-115L 1.18
    Reading firmware 'A0414431.118'...
    'A0414431.118': Invalid Pioneer firmware"

What am I missing?!? Is there a gui utility that'll do the same without dropping down to command line? (which doesn't seem to be the problem)

    Please help!

    Thanks,
    Bob

You got that firmware from WHERE?

And who told you to use "-vff" ???

Someone on RPC1 -- linked by bjkg here in his original post -- where I also downloaded the DVRA15J firmware, mentioned that parameter -- but my original problem was that I was using an earlier version of DVRFlash (2.2). After searching for and finding ver. 2.6 I began to flash the drive -- and here's where my problems really began!

Using the corrected param vrflash.exe -ff E: A0414430.118 A0414431.118 (the corrected parameter) it started downloading the new f/w to the drive. But it just hung and hung and hung, all the while telling me the kernel was being flashed to the unit. After half an hour, I figured it was toast and rebooted -- couldn't close the dos window! The drive is trashed -- non functional. So when I get another DVR-115D, do I give it another try or just do without the bitsetting function, which is my main objective. I have a pair of DVR-122 that I successfully crossflashed to 112-L with Buffalo f/w -- so I know I can do it -- though DVRFlash seems to be more difficult than the previous ones I've used.

Perhaps I should have done it in Windows safe mode? (using win200k, SP4)

If anyone can walk this dope (moi) through the process, I'd be eternally grateful. One trashed drive is sufficient...

    Bob

FYI, since this is official A15J firmware, there is NO bitsetting applied to +R and +RW. You still need to use MSCE to enable bitsetting.

The Buffalo firmware had bitsetting built-in because it was requested from Pioneer, thus, flashing to a 'L' firmware gained the setting.

With that said, if bitsetting is all you need, then there's no reason to flash it to an A15J, just MSCE'd the 115D 1.18 firmware for bitsetting, save it, and run the executable.

FWIW, I was able to flash the 115D to 115 or 115L using DVRFlash 2.6.1 through command prompt window (WXP), no safe mode needed. Of course, DVRFlash was ran first without the parameters making sure the correct drive location was identified.

Thanks for the tip -- I'll MSCE the 115D with the 1.18 f/w for bitsetting -- as soon as I get the NEXT unit. I assume the only (and correct) file I'll need is A0814001.118, right? The A0814000.113 kernel isn't necessary -- right again? (golly, for all the time I've been perusing CDFreaks, I feel stoopid!)

Correct, all you will need is the A0814001.118 firmware. When you save the file, it will add a "patched" extension. Rename the original to something else, and rename the "patched" to original. This is because the R115D flasher will only recognize the original name. You won't need to use DVRFlash. Enclosed is 1.18 loaded in MSCE with bitsetting box checked.

On another note, thought of trying a 116D instead? Not sure if MSCE is working fully with the 216/116 series yet since ala42 was looking for beta testers.

Many thanks for your help, KTL, it's truly appreciated!

The only reason I haven't considered the 116D is because thus far there's no fully tested f/w for bitsetting -- plus the 115D has such a good rep, I can't go wrong with it, especially for around $30.

    Best,
    Bob

The next MCSE release has the same support for the x16 drives as for the x15 series drives.

Got your latest release, and added bitsetting. BUT, when I try to flash the 115D with the "fixed" firmware, the unit I just got already has ver. 1.18 and won't let me flash it. Which leaves me with DVR Flash -- which trashed my last 115D the last time I tried to crossflash to A15-J.

Any suggestions? I really need the bitsetting function. Perhaps DVR Flash with the correct syntax?

    Thanks,
    Bob

Did you/can you patch the FLASHER program as well, and enable same-to-same flashing as was the case with the 112 series?

How could I be so stoooopid!!! I forgot to patch the flasher -- duh, duh and double duh!!

Of course it worked like a charm and drive was (finally!) successfully flashed with bitsetting switch. Only excuse for me is that the only crossflashing I've done, other than standard f/w updates, was with the 112.

    Thanks once again!
