If it performs well at 8x, I will consider putting it into the other PC in place of my Sammy, which will then go into the enclosureQuote:[o/t]I hate using USB drives on the ATI. Times like that make me wish I still had the Intel chipset. My poor little external Seagate is locked at 11 MB/s--no fun at all. [end o/t]
It would, too, be fair. There is not only a want to see high speed writing, but also low speed writing [8x, 6x, 4x] to see how that fares. [It's more for sport and to provide fodder for those that insist low speed writing is always better or worse]. Plus, if you have a brilliant scan at that speed, why not use it to show off?
I, for one, look forward to your "cat scans".

And OK, you asked for it

Why wouldn't that be fair? Just because other people want to burn at the fastest burning speed of their drives doesn't mean that you have to do the same.Quote:Hehe, I'll only be posting scans of 8x media in here, as it's not really fair of me to go posting 8x burns of MIDs that can do 16x+ on this drive

Hehe, I thought I'd say it first as I know at least one person will remark on itQuote:Why wouldn't that be fair? Just because other people want to burn at the fastest burning speed of their drives doesn't mean that you have to do the same.

Thanks Albert, I was hoping these would burn well at that speed 'cos MCC004 is my favourite media and I have bucketloads of the MII variety

AS mentioned in other threads, these model numbers were used in other markets.
Because having labelflash means paying a licencing fee for every drive that gets shipped, and very few people actually use it. I know our here in Australia the media is difficult to get and there's a fair amount of apathy towards labelling of this type against printing.Quote:also why not release drives in USA with labelflash? toshiba sells labelflash laptops in USA.__________________

I believe Best Buy sells some Toshiba laptops that have Labelflash capable drives. That could be the reason.Quote:[off-topic]As it is in my neck of the States. I would like to put this drive into an enclosure as well, which I plan to get first (before the drive itself). I only have a laptop to use with it. I was thinking of getting a compact duplication mini tower with a USB/FireWire connection. What would you say is limiting the speed in your case? Is it just the CPU mainly? Would you say that FireWire 400 is fast enough for 20x? Or would there be problems?Quote:Got my 115D in an enclosure, and my burn speed limit with it is 8x on the PC it's plugged into (can get 12x on the other).
Nevertheless, here's a backup that needed making, so I decided to make it my first 115D burn.
Edit: drive firmware is 1.06.

The limiting factor in my case is mainly the mobo chipset (ATi), plus my USB2 enclosure's chipset isn't terrific either (ALi). However, I can get 12x when the enclosure is plugged into my other PC (Intel ICH8) - possibly if the enclosure had a better chipset I could reach higher speeds with the Intel PC.Quote:I would like to put this drive into an enclosure as well, which I plan to get first (before the drive itself). I haven't tried Firewire, although I have a Firewire card installed. Given my experiences with the USB2 enclosure I'd definitely give Firewire a shot.

I believe it's not the BenQ being the problem with scanning DL but rather the version of cdspeed. 4.7.7.5 will not scan past the layer break in my 1620. I use cdspeed 4.7.7.0 instead and have no problems scanning an entire DL disc with jitter and all.Quote:Nor do I!

Ah, that solves that mystery. Hopefully the new 4.7.7.7 will address this, and I'm looking forward to combined jitter scanning on my 20A3P too.Quote:I believe it's not the BenQ being the problem with scanning DL but rather the version of cdspeed. 4.7.7.5 will not scan past the layer break in my 1620. I have seen the BenQ scan D/L, including jitter. All the way too.
Maybe you need an earlier cd-dvdspeed.
I don't know, but zebaddee has a scan or two showing the BenQ pass the layerbreak when including jitter. -

I'm liking how these scans look more and more. Now I definitely must get one of these drives.
Especially how some of the cheap media burns on it...it's pretty nice.
The following is with a Prolific PL2507 USB-to-PATA bridge and a fairly weak power supply that make up an HP DVD Writer 840e [references to "chipset" will be the north/southbridge combinations, or the name for that combination]:Quote:The limiting factor in my case is mainly the mobo chipset (ATi), plus my USB2 enclosure's chipset isn't terrific either (ALi). old 915G/ICH6 chipset combo + power-hungry LG gave me 12x. [Threw an old Litey in--got 16x easily]. Same LG + laptop's nVidia MPC51/nForce 430M chipset gives me almost full 16x max. [nVidia peters out at 26 or 27 MB/s on sequential external hard drive reads, which is just at 20x or so.] The ATi Xpress 200 gives flat 8x [HDD gets about 10 or 11 MB/s sequential read. I'm sure the Xpress 200M wouldn't be much better].
Haven't tried the 18x or 20x Sammies, or 20x LiteOn. I'd imagine they'd get about 18x or so, given the weak power supply.__________________

I ended up purchasing a DVR-115 to replace a failing DVR-111 (the cd tray no longer closes without manual intervention).
So far while the burn results have been ok, they are not as good as my old 111.
CD-R are Taiyo Yuden 97m24s01f and
DVD-R are TYG02
The scans are as follows:
97m24s01f burnt with DVR-115 (1.06) @ 24X
97m24s01f burnt with DVR-111 (8.29 TDB) @ 24X
TYG02 burnt with DVR-115 (1.06) @ 8X
TYG02 burnt with DVR-111 (8.29 TDB) @ 8X
All scanned with a Benq DW1650 (BCIC) -

Don't know why you think they aren't as good. The error levels are quite close for both the CD-R and DVD-R burns. Jitter is also similar. You don't actually believe that the 111L burns were better just because they scanned with a few thousand less PIE and a smidgen less PIF do you? That amount of errors is just far too low and comparing them and making a decision on which is better is pointless since there's nothing to say one will work better than the other in real world operations.Quote:I ended up purchasing a DVR-115 to replace a failing DVR-111 (the cd tray no longer closes without manual intervention).

I'd say they're both very acceptable burns and the media seems compatible with both drives @ that speed
