Tried to fit the drive in my new Dell XPS linked to a Samsung DVD-Rom both drives set to cable select as per Dell’s instructions. The drive is not recognised in the System Bios (“not known”) but is by Windows XP, however in device manager it is set to PIO rather than DMA and will not burn faster than 1 or 2x (after managing to alter this from PIO to DMA it merely reverted back to PIO). Nero recognises the drive and the speed of any media used. I tried fitting an old Hewlett Packard CD-R drive linked to the Samsung DVD-Rom drive under cable select and this was recognised immediately by the PC system Bios. Would updating the firmware solve the problem of the PC not recognising it? I’ve looked through a few posts here but am still at a loss to what the problem is. Suggestions welcomed. Thanks

Choose a specific IDE location for each device instead of using Cable Select. __________________

Cable select mode is old school. Set the DVD burner to master and the other drive to slave and you should be fine. __________________

While I agree with your recommendation, you have the "old school" comment rather backwards. Master/Slave is "old school", Cable Select is a much newer standard. In this case (as in some others), the "old school" method is preferable. Specifically, set your drives directly to Master and to Slave.Quote:Originally Posted by saturnotakuCable select mode is old school.
