DVR-109 invalid or illegal disc and could not perform end of Disc-at-once errors

After two days of disc dumping and coaster casting, I've come to the following conclusion. It appears that whenever I try to burn an audio cd (and only audio cds) using the DVR-109 (FW 1.57) and Nero 7.0 (or even Nero 6.6), I encounter invalid or illegal disc errors and "could not perform end of Disc-at-once errors."

This is a DVR-109 out of a stock Sony VAIO VGC-RC110G box purchased Oct. 2005. It burns ISO files to CD-R, copies CD-to-CD, and burns DVD just fine. However, whenever I try to create an audio cd from MP3s, it fails. It fails on both TDK and Fujifilm CD-R discs.

The DVR-109 was shipped with FW 1.10. After encountering the burn problem and poking through several threads, I flashed the drive with FW 1.58. Same problem. Several threads later, turns out 1.58 is not official and flashed back to 1.57. Same problem. Tried burns on different mediums (TDK and FUJI). You guessed it, same problem. Uninstalled Nero 7.0 and tried 6.6. No luck. BTW, I also tried burning a playlist using iTunes and got some generic burn error.

After all is said and done, I think the DVR-109 is the culprit. If anybody has any ideas, suggestions, or a fix, please let me know. I'm on the verge of committing an "Office Space" to this P.O.S.!

Nero 7 is buggy. Nero 6.6.1.18 shoudl be ok.

Create an image from mp3 first, then burn this image.

The problem is surely not the drive but the $hit software you are using.
Use a better burning prog like ImgBurn!

I am having the same EXACT problems as you, but I do find the discs are still playable. I have tried every different kind of media under the sun, so either I have incredibly bad luck and pick up a bad batch everytime i go to the store or order online, or something is wrong with this drive. This seems to happen to me when I burn mp3's to audio, both with Nero and Itunes. I even tried converting those to wav first, and had only slightly better results but still quite a bit of fails. What I also don't understand, is I have made images from the mp3's and it failed to burn with Nero or Alcohol. Alcohol will also crap out on my when burning ISO's to DVD half the time. I think it is the drive b/c I had no problems with this drive when I picked it up in August.

I am picking up a new drive today to see if that makes a difference or not, will let you know.

Even a weak PSU can generate the trouble you've described.
