Asus / Pioneer Writer Discuss, Best writing speed for Verbatim DVD+R DL using a Pioneer DVR-115D (FW 1.18) at CD and DVD Writers forum; Hi, I wonder what writing speed is the best for Verbatim DVD+R DL discs using my Pioneer DVR-115 with latest firmware. Years ago it was said "slower is better", but is that still true? Is the quality of the disc better when burning with 2x instead of 2,4x or 8x?

Hi,

I wonder what writing speed is the best for Verbatim DVD+R DL discs using my Pioneer DVR-115 with latest firmware.

Years ago it was said "slower is better", but is that still true? Is the quality of the disc better when burning with 2x instead of 2,4x or 8x? Did someone maybe even some Nero CD/DVD Speed testing on that subject?

Edit: Hmm, I'm reading both threads now... maybe I'm kinda blind, but I cannot find any info/screenshots that would let me compare results of different writing speeds for Verbatim DVD+R DL *sigh*

MKM001 is not MKM003. I would suggest 4x for the first and 6x for the other.

Look at the Disc Quality Scans in the referenced Forum postings. In the very beginning of the Disc Quality Scan posting information it is posted what speed the particular Media was Burned at.

Using Verbatim +R DL 8X made in Singapore I burn at 6X with no problems, Maybe the slower you burn is better is an old wifes tale now days with the newer burners and good quality media such as TY's or Verbs you should be able to burn at or near max with no problems

Apparently you are unaware of how to view and decipher the data from the Disk Quality Scans posted by Forum Members.

Media with the MID (Manufacture ID and Media Code) MKM001 and MKM003 is Verbatim DL Media manufacture by Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (MKM) which is the corporate name for “Verbatim”. Provided that I interpret the last 4 linked posts correctly, the best result for MKM003 (Verbatim DVD+R DL 8x) has been burn speed 6x. Well, since I'm only buying 2,4x certified media (cheaper), I guess 2x or 2,4x is perfect (is there a difference to expect between those two)?

I think 1x would be too slow for todays drives (Pioneer DVR-115D). Would you agree?

Yeah, I thought so, too. Then again, it doesn't matter to me if I have to wait 50, 30 or just 10 minutes for my discs. I don't burn that much after all. I just want my discs to be as reliable and long-living as possible

Only 2.4x is an suitable speed for PLUS media, not 2x nor 1x.
Cheaper DL media will also normally only allow 2.4x depending on the burner/firmware, because they ususally are not reliable media.

Ok, thanks... that info most likely saved me from wasting one or more discs

I'll simply burn my Verbatim DVD+R DL 2,4x with 2,4x speed then (my initial thought was that 2x or even 1x might result in better disc quality).

This may be different, but with my Pio 112D I get better results burning MKM 001's at 4X.

From My Experience:

MKM 001 - 2.4x or 4x
MKM 003 - 6x

Pioneer 115D performs better on MKM 003 8x rated media

I have burned a few discs now with 2,4x speed and everything seems to be fine. Since 2,4x media is cheaper and easier available here, I'll stick to that. I guess the difference to 8x rated media wouldn't be worth the additional costs anyway.

MKM003 here recently went down in price. 10pack MKM001 €15 and 10pack MKM003 €17. No question what to get.

You can get usable copies often even at 8x when burning on DL 2.4x discs (115 on Verb/MKM +R discs). However, you may run into compatibility issues with older drives or even rack dvd players.

Further, it is useful to note that you sacrifice a lot of longevity of the discs by burning at a faster speed.

That is, the disc and the data on it will deteriorate faster due to less than optimal initial burn quality. I've tested this myself with two accelerated aging tests and tests by c't magazine imply the same.
