18X/16X DVD+R seems to be OK.
How long does it take to burn a disc at 8X/10X/12X? DVD-R part?

Oh, thanks. A Looong 8X PCAV burning on DVD+R. Aggressive WOPC kicks-in-and-out.

That has nothing to do with the specific drive, it's more a problem of the SATA controller. Every SATA drive will boot XP.

I am testing the DRW-1814BLT. Empty disc recognition sometimes very slow and many times fails. Anybody else can confirm this? I got two drives and both of them suffer this problem.

me too.
I bought 2 of DRW-1814BLT.
One is good, but the other is not good.
Slow disk recognition, and sometimes fails.
The problem happens frequently on FUJI oxolife disks.
(ex. RITEKF1, ProdiscF02...)

Initial malfunction?

I got the same info from other users. I think a lot of DRW-1814BLT involved. Decent drive, except this annoying disc recognition problem.

I can confirm this. Sometimes very slow disc recognition.
It's not a bad drive, but needs firmware upgrade.

What kind of SATA contoller and motherboard do you have? Do you installed specific driver for the SATA controller? Do you have any other CD/DVD related software installed such as BlindWrite, Alcohol, AnyDVD? These programs can filter and alter ODD communication and interfere with other burning applications with improper settings.

I'm having problem with my Asrock mobo. (M1573 SATA controller) The Asus is the only SATA device on my system. Tried the latest SATA driver still the same buffer issue... Maybe it's the writer...

The burst rate is okay at 54MB/s. No other application is running when doing DVD Speed tests. The buffer drops are alway the same, 1st test will drop @ around 14x mark, 2nd test after the 700MB mark.

Sen, I think there is nothing wrong with your drive. The 1814 uses very active OPC during the burning process so it's not a buffer issue, try to burn a different 16x speed media and defragment the source HDD you are burning from.

That's really weird to go all of a sudden like that. Tried both M$ and ULi?
