What software & media for dvd video burning.

Right, this question is a simple one but i got to ask it. Previously i was using a LG 8041B to do all of my burning and dam, did that thing work good for burning Movie Dvd's.
Wanted to upgrade and after reading all the reviews about the NEC 3500A drive i had to get one.
So i got it and burnt my first disk, it came out a DOD (dead on delivery) i mean the disk did, wouldn't work. Figured it was my media so i got some new media, the TTG02 ones and the VDSPMSAB 01. Now the TTG02 ones will burn in Intervideo DVD copy with ease, no problems, but the VDSPMSAB 01 ones will always burn fully but not be able to be read by either the NEC drive or any other drives. Now i am guessing it's because it is burning it faster than it can take (using Quickee's firmware, but even if i switch to the original firmware they still do it). Plus even if the DVD is copied correctly i can't read it at all in the NEC drive without the computer freezing while if i put it in my other drive i can watch the movie and they work in the regular dvd player.

So here is the question. What software and media are you using for DVD Video copying and also, does your drive seem to take a long while before it begins to recognize that a disc is in it?

Thanks for any response.

Re: What software & media for dvd video burning.

I recommend DVD Shrink. It works very well and is free. Do a search for it and dl it. Let's u either create an .iso image or burn to disc. I would recommend also using nero for burning the disc.

As far as problems reading discs, none at all. I have a lot of crappy quality media a burn with also, such as LONGTEN 001, MUST 001 and fake TYG02. I have no problems reading or burning them at all. Also, playback on my dvd player has not been an issue either.

Re: What software & media for dvd video burning.

For SL : Nero or CopyToDVD or DVDDecrypter

For DL : CopyToDVD or DVDDecrypter (avoid Nero for DL, no layer break optimization)

Re: What software & media for dvd video burning.

Yo-

I use AnyDVD and InterVideo DVD Copy and use Ritek 8x -R's and Tayio Yuden 8x -R's with both my 3500's using Liggys 2.18 SE and get excellent copies - and NO coasters !!

And it is only One Click to get it going-

Re: What software & media for dvd video burning.

well my problems seem to come from when i use the VDSPMSAB 01 media as the TTG02 media burns perfect without any problems whatsoever using Anydvd and Intervideo DVD copy. Looks like i am going to have to buy some new media.

bigmike7-

Don't mean to be a smart-a$$, but how is it that you've posted approx. 760 times 'bout your "Great Burns", yet we haven't seen any scans of any kind of anyone of them. Specially using that nasty "InterVideo DVD Copy app!

Re: What software & media for dvd video burning.

Yo pcdoc-

I have very carefully stayed away from LiteOn drives - so therefore don't have access to kprobe - so therefore cannot post any of my great burns........;-)

But I have watched a lot of great burned movies........:-) And I don't have to dink around with DVDdecrypter/
dvdshrink/Nero - I just put the original in my DVD-rom drive - let AnyDVD do its thing - open InterVideo DVD Copy - click "start" and 25 to 35 minutes later have a nice copy that plays as good as the original on my JVC standalone - which is good enough for me-

Hmmm, just wondering…. It doesn’t require a Liteon to do scans (just Kprobe). I’ve seen disk with 400,000+ PO’s with peaks @ 750-800 and 45,000+ PIF’s with peaks of 40-50 that still played all the way through on my Sony. Of course I couldn’t/wouldn't imply to anyone that they were “Great Burns”.

Re: What software & media for dvd video burning.

Yo pcdoc-

I consider when I get a copy of a movie that is as good as the original - a great burn - as compared with the burns I was getting on Prodisc 8x +R's with stops and pixelization (sp?) which I considered poor burns-

Would it make you happy to just say good burns in the future to stop your flaming??

And yes kprobe only works with LiteOn and Sony burners - not NEC's - a well known fact on these boards-

Hey I'm not flaming! I'm just saying that without scans, quotes like "....use Ritek 8x -R's and Tayio Yuden 8x -R's, or, " I get much better burns with TY-R than TY+R", are basically without foundation and therefore mis-leading.

I assume you'll consider this a flame as well although not intended to be..... I guess next time you post "good media = good burns", I'll just consider it to be your slogan.......... (kinda like Yo)

Regards-

Read the post! I ask for scans not KProbe scans.......... CDSpeed, DVDInfo, Plextools, whatever would be just fine...........

Re: What software & media for dvd video burning.

hey BIGMIKE... no need to fret cdspeed does quality scans on your aopen (list of supported drives HERE) and truthfully if it is a NEC it probably is a GREAT BURN! so when you get a chance go HERE and download it an contribute a beautiful scan to the mix brother!

Re: What software & media for dvd video burning.

Yo cnlson-

Here are three scans-

These are all of the same movie burned on the same 3500:

First is Taiyo Yuden 8x +R that had bad crc's at the end of the burn (per DVDinfoPro)

Second is Taiyo Yuden 8x -R - no bad crc's

Third is Ritek 8x -R - no bad crc's

The thing that TOTALLY amazes me is the speeds that the last two burned at!!!

Now you can see why I am saying that I am getting great burns on the Ritek and TY -R medias-

Re: What software & media for dvd video burning.

Yo cnlson-

Kinda questioned my scans last night - so did what you suggested - scanned again in the Aopen (supported CD-DVD Speed Test drive) and came up with the following-which more supports what others say the transfer speed should be-

Again - the Taiyo Yuden 8x +R(first scan) shows the errors - the Taiyo Yuden 8x -R(second scan) shows ok burn - and the Ritek 8x -R shows a very good burn-

These are all the same movie and all burned on the same burner-

Re: What software & media for dvd video burning.

The point was to do Disc Quality Test using the Aopen..... not transfer rate test.

Whenever you say that NEC ND-3500AG prefers DVD-R media, you MUST SAY this is personal experience on your SYSTEM AND SETUP!

Because you replied like 100s times the same answer, I had to re-run few Nero CD-DVD speed version 3.55 transfer tests on my burned DVD+R and I get PERFECT transfer curve. Not even a small dip or drop, smooth line start to finish of about 4.2GB. There is no way DVD-R can improve on this curve.

I tried:
5 discs Fuji 8x DVD+R made in Japan, YUDEN000 T02
2 discs TDK 8x DVD+R made in Taiwan, CMCMAG E01

All discs were burned as ISO image ripped by DVDDecrypter or created by DVD Shrink, on quiet system, burned with DVDDecrypter where I set speed to 8X. I am on firmware 2C8_SE_Ritek_4X_DL. My drive is secondary master on old EIDE 33MBs 40 pin connector (don't you laugh now). Windows XP, UDMA2 mode.
Disk drive is ATA133 8MB cache on same slow controller as primary master with 80 pin cable (doesn't matter as controller is slower anyway) and can burst to 26MBs,

Now, If you show scans with error counts PI/PO Jitters, etc, then I have to decide.

Re: What software & media for dvd video burning.

Yo Goudo-

Welcome to the boards-

It is assumed in here that in the main we are mostly nonprofessional users and these are our experiences with our own systems-

Every system and or burner is unique to the system that it is installed in-

There are others in these forums that reinforce that the 3500's favor -R media and others that say that they prefer +R media - so ALL replys are personal experience/opinion and should be taken with that in mind IMHO-

Hmmm, a system unique to the system it is installed in, what does this mean?

All may be considered personal opinions but are usually derived from some kind of testing, generally PO/PI error scanning versus gut feelings. Of course this is a public board and to each his own, but the point made earlier still remains. Something more than “feel good” should be the basis for objective recommendations.

Most peeps want to confirm their positions with some kind of fact. So if the benchmark or standard is for instance, PO/PI scanning and people are unwilling to do it, then it’s for a reason. Either, they don’t have the tools to do it (a drive that reports PO/PI errors), they don’t know how to do it, or they test and discover the results don’t support their previous position…..

Regards -

"Most peeps want to confirm their positions with some kind of fact"

I agree with this statement, so you can imagine how frustrating it is when someone does a burn in an Nec 4551 and then scans it in a BenQ, this compares to a chef who cooks a meal doesn't taste a blessed thing then asked someone else to taste the meal and provide their opinion.
