TDK 440 External Multiformat dvd-rw and tdk 440n (nec 1300a) 1.0C discs

I have a TDK 440 External Multiformat dvd-rw with firmware updated to 1.0C from: http://www.tdk.com/support/dvdburner....html#firmware

I bought some 4x dvd-r discs that said they were compatible with tdk 440n (nec 1300a), firmware 1.0C. They refuse to work with any software even after a by-the-book flashing of external drive with the 1.0C firmware.

The software recognizes the discs and sucessful tests them, but upon attempting to write to them, one software merely says 'read error', another first says something like recalibration error then says there has been an error with the media.

This is usually due to crappy media quality. Try to burn them at a lower speed (2x for example).

Retrieve mediacode with DVDIdentifier and post result.

Before I purchase them, would the below listed work?
In my tdk package was included a list of recommended media and sony dvd-rs were on it. These I can purchase at a local best buy, but they are expensive. Should I try them?

Better choose some 4x speed, which should be supported by firmware.

I don't know the mediacode of the Sony's. You could end with unsupported disc.
