Hi there,

My laptop cd/dvd drive is giving me a headache!!!!

It's Acer TravelMate 2480, and the drive is "Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530A ATA Device".

The damn computer cannot even recognize that the drive exists. In My Computer, the CD drive is not displayed!!! Everything was working perfectly until I last defragmented the hard disk of the laptop. Now the computer is giving the message: "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

Can someone out there help, please? What should I do to get the laptop cope with the cd drive?

Hello, welcome to CDF

I'll move this thread to our NEC/Optiarc forum where you'll hopefully get some helpful replies

Edit: you don't mention your OS, but I'll guess XP - follow the instructions on this MS support page on deleting your upper and lower filters.

If you're unsure about editing the Windows Registry, there is a Guided Help which you can download from the same page, to help you through the process.

To be honest, I use XP so haven't tried it with Vista. Maybe wait til a Vista user or two chime in.

Only half victory won.

Phil1210, now you just have to find out what application corrupted your filters.

Whe using the application that corrupted your filter again, you'll be back at square one.
Upper / lower filters are not static. Any (burning) application can load its own ones.

Edit. Hint, look for emulation (drive/media hiding) software like Alcohol, Daemon tools, Gear* aso software.

I just had a friend bring a Gateway to me with the SAME exact issue. Running Vista and once again, the upper/lower filter removal worked like a charm. Exactly WHY does this work? What are these "filters" anyway, and why do programs use and change them? Thanks so much for your help!
