Ian over at CDRLabs burned one at the exact same speed and time, his quality was really good as well.
I burned up all my TY media a long time ago, also my Sony and some Ricoh that the S203b really liked at 18x
Like I said need some new A grade media, don't really know what to look for these days, I just usually try to find made in Japan stuff and see if I get lucky.

hey guys i was wondering is there a patch or something to let this drive bitset? dvd+r to dvd-rom. i havent read anything about booktypeing this drive is it possible and if so where can we get it?

No such patch available right now. I haven't been able to extract the firmware for this drive. So don't expect a bitsetting (or RPC1) patch before an official update is available.

You need to flash or dump your NEC DVD burner firmwares on your Mac, Windows, DOS or Linux machine? Just try Binflash.
Visit Liggy's and Dee's Optiarc and NEC firmware and tools page for all kind of information about NEC and Optiarc drives.

Liggy has been working on this but it looks like we will have to wait until the first Firmware update.

Update: It seems that most -R 8x can overspeed to 12x but I have not discovered any +R 8x that will overspeed. I mentioned early on in this thread that there was no overspeeding with 8x media.

Not being that updated nowdays, but by looking at the drives write strategy it's nice to see a NEC chipset drive back in business again.

BTW, my old 3500 is still an option when you wanna compare @max 16x burns. Or better just search in this forum section.
